GENERAL OVERVIEW: The RN Flow Manager (Flow Manager) is valued member of the donor center leadership team. The primary responsibility of the Flow Manager is to coordinate and expedite the donor center operations ensuring an exceptional donor experience. The Flow Manager manages the immediate operational needs, supervising and directing other members of the donor center staff and mobile drive to advance toward department blood product collection goals. Develops strong collaborative relationships across roles, disciplines and departments with a focus that ensures the needs of donor are addressed. The Flow Manager is accountable for direct oversight of staff to ensure compliance with cGMP, FDA and AABB standards. Functions as a super-user of donor center IT systems and works the Blood Bank IT team to address issues. Works with mobile drive coordinators and recruitment team to ensure smooth blood drive operations. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Leadership: Coordinate and expedite donor center and blood mobile operations including, but not limited to: a. Directs, delegates and monitors quality of blood product collection done by the donor center team. b. Functions within and across interdisciplinary teams in a manner that promotes coordination, mutual respect and timely response to donor care and safety. c. Facilitates development of efficient and safe workflows that ensure the quality, purity and potency of blood products collected. d. Facilitates huddles, promotes and models effective, respectful communication and team work. e. Utilizes a critical thinking approach to problem solve and make decisions. f. Identifies and evaluates operational needs and resolves concerns early g. Role models and facilitates change within the team to respond to emerging standards and practice changes. h. Fosters and implements innovative thinking to create alternative solutions. i. Manages all resources to support optimal care of blood donors. j. Models and promotes team building and leadership skills. Applies leadership skills to facilitate effective team functioning and operations of the department. k. Develops strong collaborative relationships across roles and departments with a focus to ensure timely accesses of emerging needs of patients are addressed. 2. Management a. Provides clinical oversight and support as needed to nursing staff and donor technicians in collaboration with the Medical Director, Nursing Director and Practice Manager. b. Manages changes in staffing schedule and appropriately adjusts resources to ensure operational needs of the donor center and blood mobile are met. c. Authorizes hours worked by donor room staff, including any overtime. Direct recipient of sick and tardy calls for donor room staff. d. Assumes accountability for evaluation of performance of RN's, and donor technician's under the delegation/direction of the nurse director. e. Participates in the selection, supervision and of staff f. Coordinates the orientation of new staff and addresses staff development needs. 3. Quality and Safety a. Collaborates with nurse director and medical director in setting quality standards for blood product donation. Participate in the development, validation and revision of standard operating procedures. b. Demonstrates ability to analyze, synthesize and apply data to drive optimal blood product collection that achieve department targets. c. Works with Nurse Director and Compliance team to address issues identified via Occurrence management. d. Oversight for TJC, AABB, FDA readiness and quality programs. 4. Clinical Care a. Provides evidence-based, clinically competent nursing care in a culturally sensitive manner. b. Performs all clinical tasks and responsibilities of the BWH RN as permitted by licensure, scope and institutional policy. c. Performs skilled tasks competently and demonstrates operational knowledge of procedures and equipment. 5. Technology a. Demonstrates technological literacy in using computerized information systems. b. Accesses, evaluates and uses data and information from a wide range of resources. c. Demonstrates effective use of computer-based information and donor management systems for blood collection management, decision support, continuous quality improvement and professional development. d. Provides input to the development of information systems that impact support the donor center. e. Facilitates and oversees staff use of health care technologies. f. Able to develop, access and apply reporting data. Additional Responsibilities: Staff blood drives and the donor room on an emergent basis to provide appropriate levels for anticipated donor volumes. Revise plan in response to rescheduling of drives. Follow up on all donor reactions. Ensure that the donor center is always prepared for inspections by FDA, JC and AABB. Oversee the training of new techs and nurses and ensure complete documentation is done. Ensure direct observations and competency quizzes are done annually. Oversees blood product collection and ensures quality standards (cGMP, FDA and AABB) are followed. • Graduated from an approved school of nursing, BSN required. MSN preferred. NE-BC preferred. • Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Massachusetts. • Continually update clinical knowledge & skills through formal and informal education and review of the current literature. • Proven ability to work well independently, possess sound decision making skills and work effectively when required to make and facilitate complex decisions.
