Job Summary

Coordinates and performs all aspects of diagnostic testing relating to the practice of respiratory care, participates in Respiratory Rehabilitation Series and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. Maintains and evaluates equipment/supplies for diagnostic services and educational needs of the department and community as related to respiratory care. Performs tests, maintains equipment and facilitates operation of diagnostic services for respiratory care. Serves as resource to staff and coordinates operations in the outpatient area. Coordinates and monitors the Blood Gas Laboratory operations, to assure adherence to standards relating to procurement and analysis of blood gas samples. Participates in Pulmonary Rehabilitation. Coordinates staff continuing education program for Respiratory Care, collaborates with other health care team members in developing and providing patient education. Evaluates, selects, utilizes and accounts for equipment/supplies necessary for daily operation in Pulmonary Lab.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education: Associate's Degree and Graduate of AMA accredited program in Respiratory Care.
Minimum Years of Experience: 2 Years of experience in Respiratory Care with an emphasis on diagnostics
Substitutable Education & Experience: None.
Required Certifications/Licensure: Licensed by the Board of Medical Examiners for the State of South Carolina (biennial renewal required);

ACLS Certification (NRP for In-Patient diagnostic coordinator).
Required Training: None.

Essential Functions
  • Demonstrates competence to provide developmentally appropriate care/treatment for the following patient population: Infant (Birth to 1 year); Child (1 year through 12 years); Adolescent (13 years through 17 years); Adult (18 through 65 years); Geriatric (over 65 years)
  • Assists Manager and Director with staff education, orientation and competencies: Serves in the role of educational mentor to all staff;   Orients all new employees to routine and critical care procedures;  Identifies needs for staff development and participates in annual competency evaluation of staff;  Organizes and performs annual competencies for respiratory therapists;  Provides education to other disciplines as related to respiratory therapy;  Contacts vendors as needed to set up demonstrations on new equipment of supplies;  Provides community outreach education and serves as representative for health fairs specific to COPD, Asthma and other respiratory wellness opportunities;  Serves on hospital patient education team.
  • Performs tests, maintains equipment and facilitates operations of diagnostic services for respiratory care.             
    • Routine troubleshooting and maintenance of diagnostic and clinical equipment.   
    • Maintains adequate supplies for performing all diagnostic tests.     
    • Monitors and evaluates the safety, efficiency and accuracy of diagnostic tests performed in outpatient services.          
    • Serves as resource to staff and coordinates operations in the outpatient area.  
  • Maintains policy and procedure manual for clinical and diagnostic respiratory care.    
    • Researches best practice and assists with policy and procedure development and revisions.             
    • Educates staff to new policies and procedures
  • Coordinates and monitors the diagnostic and clinical operations, to assure adherence to standards.               
    • Monitors performance of daily quality control and maintenance of blood gas analyzers.             
    • Maintains records and policies to ensure that all standards for CAP certification and DNV are met.            
    • Serves as liaison between Respiratory Care and the main lab as related to blood gases.
  • Coordinates staff continuing education programs related to respiratory therapy, collaborates with other health care team members in developing and providing patient education.   
    • Serves as instructor to other disciplines and to the community on issues pertinent to respiratory therapy. Participates in critical care blitz on respiratory specific education.   
    • Provides patient education to the COPD and asthmatic patient populations.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Liaison between Respiratory Care and Materials Management for inventory and procurement of supplies.              
    • Contacts for vendors to demonstrate new products.       
    • Provides data and input to director for the development of the annual budget.
  • Member of departmental Quality Improvement Team. Participates in departmental process improvement specific to supplying education to staff when needed to improve quality.
  • Contributes to staff performance reviews by supplying pertinent information to manager and supervisors related to arterial blood gas procurement/analysis, diagnostic and clinical procedures.
  • Participates in delivery of all routine and critical care duties of the respiratory therapist.   
    • Performs Impatient and Pulmonary Lab procedures as needed.     
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • One clinical diagnostic coordinator is assigned to the Endoscopy department to assist with all bronchoscopy lab procedures.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
