Job Summary

The Police Officer responds to and resolves calls for service, performs law enforcement duties and patrols the District to ensure the safety and security of patients, visitors and staff.

Minimum Qualifications

•Minimum Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent

•Substitutable Education & Experience: None
•Required Certifications/Licensure: Possess a South Carolina Class 1 Police Officer Certification or attain certification within the first 12 months of employment. successfully complete annual requirement to maintain South Carolina Class 1 Police Officer Certification, as well as the following: firearms qualification, defensive tactics (to include intermediate weapons), Criminal Justice Information Systems Security and Awareness, Restraint Application, Crisis Intervention and any and all required training through Lexington Medical Center; Possess International Association of Healthcare Safety and Security Basic Certification or attain certification within first 12 months of employment; certified in CPR or attain certification within the first 3 months of employment; Must have and maintain a valid South Carolina's driver's license and acceptable Motor Vehicle record and background screening as outlined in the Vehicle Safety policy (Subject to annual Motor Vehicle Record review and satisfactory results).
•Required Training: Successfully complete a psychological evaluation; Successfully complete initial and annual Department Physical Fitness Test; Successfully pass a comprehension exam as required by the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy; Experience with Windows Operating System (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint); Ability to read and write English fluently and follow both written and oral directions.

Essential Functions
  • Patrols all areas within the District on a regular and non-scheduled basis.
  • Responds to calls for service.
  • Observes, instructs, corrects, investigates and reports persons or incidents involving, but not limited to, suspected break-ins, tampering, vandalism, thefts, property damage, safety hazards, smoke, fire obstructions and conditions or violations contrary to the best interest of the District.
  • Responds to requests for assistance of all natures to include the more serious offenses such as but not limited to; an armed individual, an active shooter situation or any crime where a weapon may be involved.
  • Conducts interviews and investigations of complaints or persons accused or suspected of illegal activities. 
  • Prepares written reports of investigation based on his or her actions.
  • Prepares for and gives legal testimony in court.
  • Operate vehicle and equipment in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Ensures compliance of accreditation standards within the District.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Participates in continuous training to enhance law enforcement skills including firearm proficiency, apprehension and arrest techniques, defensive tactics and other general law enforcement skills.
  • Checks packages and identification.  Detains and questions unauthorized persons with improper identification or those in restricted or inactive locations.
  • Provides armed escorts of arrested prisoner(s) to the Detention Center.  May also transport a prisoner(s) to court from the Detention Center.
  • Provides secure transportation for behavioral health patients throughout South Carolina.
  • Release remains of deceased patients from the Morgue to the proper funeral home(s), making sure the body is properly identified.
  • Checks parking areas for violations and issues parking citations.
  • Locks and unlocks certain entrances, offices and areas.
  • Acts as a liaison between Public Safety and different District departments under a Hospital Watch Program. 
  • May be placed temporarily in charge of a shift in the absence of a supervisor.
  • Ensures timely resolution to requests.
  • Any other request assigned by management.
