Job SummaryThe Optician is responsible for helping customers achieve the right type of eyeglasses, lens shape or contact lenses in accordance with their eyesight or eye conditions. Their duties include communicating with other eye care professionals to receive prescriptions and send them to a laboratory, providing customers with sample frames to fit their prescriptions, finishing lenses, and maintaining accurate customer data regarding their current or updated prescriptions. Works under the direction of the clinical provider (Ophthalmologist) and office manager.
Minimum QualificationsMinimum Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent
Minimum Years of Experience: 2 years of experience in an optical setting

Required Certifications/Licensure: American Board of Opticianry & National Contact Lens Examiners Certification
Required Training: General knowledge of medical ethics and confidentiality;
Successful completion of the basic LMC competency assessment for Opticians within probationary period or any extension thereof

- Enters pertinent information into Epic and any other retail POS systems as needed.
- Verifies that all information in the patient chart is correctly entered and associated; and initiates appropriate action when necessary.
- Demonstrates knowledge and effective use of medical terminology.
- Maintains established stock levels of clerical supplies.
- Restock and maintain rooms with supplies needed for patient care and retail.
- Use prescription information from the doctor and the patient's preferences, face shape and other factors to help select the appropriate pair of eyeglasses, frames and lenses.
- Give product recommendations to patients based on their vision needs and lifestyle, such as frame construction, lens material and lens coatings.
- Effectively and accurately explain pricing and insurance benefits to patients.
- Accurately navigate different databases to place orders for frames and lenses.
- Take accurate measurements of each patient's face and optical details to ensure a comfortable and proper fit before ordering frames.
- Adjust new frames using optical tools or pliers to get a closer and more accurate fit on the patient's face when the patient has problems with comfort or poor vision.
- Perform cutting, polishing, and grinding lenses per prescription for finishing eyewear.
- Perform adjustments and/or repairs on damaged frames.
- Instruct patients on how to use contact lenses by showing them how to clean the lenses, insert them, remove them easily and properly care for contact lenses.
- Maintain a clean and visually appealing daily optical display by organizing the stock of eyeglasses, sunglasses and accessories.
- Complete additional office tasks regularly such as preparing paperwork for patient insurance payments, ordering inventory and tracking orders in the system.
- Performs other optical assistance such as preparation and maintenance of optical shop, patient interviews, chaperoning and assisting patients as needed, implementing prescription orders and interacting with ophthalmology.
- Maintains required certifications, completes yearly safety training and mandatory classes and clinical competences assessments, and complies with annual employee health requirements.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
