Job Summary

The CDI Manager is responsible for the management of the Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) Program providing oversight of concurrent review of medical record clinical documentation to capture documented and potential principal diagnosis, secondary diagnoses and procedures affecting DRG assignment and profiling outcomes. The manager provides direct oversight of the query process to obtain accurate and complete physician documentation that supports DRG assignment and the severity of patient illness and risk of mortality.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
Minimum Years of Experience: 5 Years of Acute Care Leadership Experience
Substitutable Education & Experience (Optional): None.
Required Certifications/Licensure: Current RN License to Practice in the State of South Carolina;
Certification from either AAPC (Certified Documentation Expert - Inpatient CDEI), ACDIS (Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS), or AHIMA (Certified Documentation Improvement Practitioner (CDIP).
Required Training: Knowledge of Health Information Systems and Database Management.

Essential Functions
  • Collaborates with physician, physician extender, nurse, case manager/utilization reviewer and HIM coders to identify principal diagnosis options, secondary diagnoses and procedures, to assign working DRGs for identified populations.
  • Recruits, selects, and develops personnel to support the areas of responsibility.
  • Participates in the development of programs and action plans to achieve desired outcomes.
  • This position requires working onsite in a hospital environment and daily interactions with physicians and other clinical staff.
  • Monitors the initial and extended-stay concurrent reviews on all selected admissions and documents findings on DRG worksheets denoting all key information utilized in the tracking process.
  • Utilizes strong communication skills with physician, physician extender, case manager, utilization reviewer, nurse or other healthcare professionals, utilizing appropriate tools to capture needed documentation.  Works collaboratively with the healthcare team to facilitate documentation within the medical record that supports patient's severity of illness and risk of mortality.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Maintains complete confidentiality of patient information, in addition to hospital and individual physician practice pattern data.
  • Conducts ongoing physician and staff education in group practice settings and one-on-ones as necessary
  • Utilizes monitoring tools to track the progress of the CDI program and interprets tracking information.  Reports findings to HIM Director or designee at regular meetings.
  • Establishes CDI Program performance indicators and implements measures to achieve goals. 
  • Develops standards of performance for CDI staff within the department, coordinates and conducts performance appraisals and oversees disciplinary actions.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
