Job Summary

Reviews the records of patients diagnosed, treated, or followed for cancer at Lexington Medical Center in order to collect diagnostic, prognostic, treatment, and survival data for the purpose of monitoring/analyzing cancer incidence, treatment, outcomes, performance improvement and subsequently assisting with administrative planning and marketing, support programs, and research
activities. Interprets data for research projects. Compiles non-analytic data for facility and state databases.  Maintains oncology registry database in compliance with Commission on Cancer (CoC) standards, SEER federal guidelines and the South Carolina Central Cancer Registry (SCCCR).

Required Certifications/Licensure: Ability to sit for and successfully pass CTR certification within two years of hire
Required Training: None.

Essential Functions
  • Identify reportable and non-reportable neoplasms to be included in the registry as outlined by CoC standards and SCCCR reporting requirements.
  • Create suspense files for identified reportable neoplasms by abstracting information from the patient medical record to include demographic characteristics, history of neoplasm, primary site, histology, laterality, casefinding source, location of diagnosis, managing physician, type of diagnostic confirmation and name of referring facility.
  • Perform oncology coding and abstraction of identified non-reportable neoplasms for inclusion in the registry database in compliance with standards set by the CoC, SEER, the SCCCR, the Lexington Medical Center Cancer Committee guidelines and departmental standards.
  • Transfer AJCC staging from EHR into cancer registry database for analytic cases abstracted.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Collect survivorship data for all applicable newly-diagnosed cancer patients to include medical status, first recurrence, death and autopsy information from patient medical records or letters to provide end results information.
  • Qualitative analysis – Perform a comprehensive review of data entered for each patient to ensure the completion and accuracy of the data elements.
  • Assist with room and audiovisual equipment set up for weekly oncology conferences.
  • Maintain competency and stay abreast of current literature and trends by participating in at least one cancer-related educational activity at the local level in accordance with CoC standards.
  • Perform all other job related tasks as assigned by Cancer Registry Manager.
