Job Summary
As a firmware engineer the candidate will participate in the development, test, and production of cutting edge laser systems. From concepts through to shipping products the candidate will work with a team of engineers to design, implement, document, and test embedded software and HDL code. The candidate is expected to design functional blocks for an embedded system and write code to implement functionality. They will use a code versioning system to track and review code changes. Candidate will be expected to write test code to perform unit tests on functional blocks.
- Responsible for technical activity and completion of assigned task on time and budget.
- Design, develop, analyze, document and support testing of products, systems, or subsystems.
- May use computer-aided engineering or other design / analysis software in the performance of assignments.
- Report of progress and status regularly.
- Review customer specifications and requirements, and under direction, develop designs to best support them, including cost as a key design variable.
- Provide budget, cost and schedule input for design assignments.
- Develop prototypes to retire key development risks.
- Communicate clearly (written and oral) with other company personnel and the customer as required.
- Participates in preparation of less-complex proposals.
- May provide technical knowledge and assistance to other engineers and support personnel.
- Support, communicate, reinforce, and defend the mission, values and culture of the organization.
The ideadl candidate will have:
- Software development skills including architecting larger designs and implementing smaller functional blocks.
- Knowledge of C and C++ programming languages.
- Knowledge of Hardware Description Languages (HDL) such as VHDL or Verilog is a plus.
- Ability to work with hardware engineers to define and implement requirements for firmware functionality.
- Ability to work with software engineers to define and implement requirements related to communication interfaces and other interactions with software.
- Ability to debug firmware and hardware through development tool debugger interfaces.
- Understanding of embedded design principles and functionality.
- Experience with lab equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, function generators, etc.) is a plus.
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering or related technical field or equivalent experience and a minimum of 2 years of experience
- Competent technical expertise and application domain knowledge
- Ability to work independently
The pay scale for this position is $89,491/year - $133,788/year. The pay scale information is a general guideline only. Several factors can influence the pay scale for a position including but not limited to, Federal Government contract labor categories and contract wage rates, collective bargaining agreements, geographic locations, business considerations, scope and responsibilities of the position, local or other applicable market conditions, and internal equity. Other factors include the candidate's qualifications such as relevant prior work experience, specific skills and competencies, education/training, and certifications.
