Greenhouse and Insectary Technician
Kelly Outsourcing Consulting Group Kelly OCG, a managed solution provider and business unit of Kelly Services, Inc., is currently seeking a Greenhouse and Insectary Technician for a long-term engagement at one of our Global agriculture clients in Indianapolis, IN. This role is a full-time, fully benefited position. As a Kelly OCG employee, you will be eligible for Medical, Dental, 401K and paid time off, including holiday, vacation and sick/personal time.
Scope:
The job is highly routine, detail-oriented, and focuses primarily on insect colony care and maintenance.
Insect rearing work might involve working with many potential allergens such as pollen, debris from various dried plants, insect rearing, peanuts, etc., but use of appropriate PPE will be mandated for such tasks.
Responsibilities:
- Handling many plant species growing in vertical growth chambers.
- Equipment cleaning, floor cleaning, and weekend plant checks.
- Routine checks on the fertigation system.
- Pot filling, pot assembly - Media preparation in readiness for planting.
- Ascertain irrigation has taken place through the automated system.
- Help with plant propagation daily tasks such as loading of benches into the automated system.
- Insect Colony Care and Maintenance.
- Insect diet and media preparation.
- Support Insect Management research trials.
- Production and maintenance of various insect and nematode cultures.
- Contribute to developing techniques in rearing new insect species.
- Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to assist in insect management research.
- Assist in Insectary tasks as needed, including Insectary media production.
- Interface with researchers, demonstrating a strong customer focus, organization, and time management skills.
- Follow standard operating procedures, report and assist in troubleshooting colony issues, and collect colony data.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Qualifications:
- Plant Science Experience preferred; College Degree not required but preferred
- Ability to work with soil/media.
- Ability to work with plants of different species.
- Ability to work with and around automated equipment such as pot fillers, seeders, and bench moving systems.
- Must be able to stand for long periods and possess acute attention to detail.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
- Must be able to work in a team environment and be comfortable working alone on solitary tasks as well.
- Must have good organization skills, great attention to detail, follow SOPs and verbal instructions, and adhere to safety and compliance protocols.
- Should be able to complete tasks with little supervision after the initial training period is over.
- Must be a fast learner and flexible as tasks and customer requests change frequently or with little notice.
- Time management is very important as most tasks need to be started and completed within the same day.
