Job title: Assistant Laboratory Director
Location: Knoxville, TN (onsite)
Salary Range: $62-65,000
Shift: Days | 9am-5pm
Job Summary:
The Assistant Lab Director oversees technicians that perform routine laboratory tasks, including molecular analysis, DNA extractions, qPCR templates, and master mixes. The role will fill in for any position as necessary. Also has training to fill in for the Director and oversee all laboratory processes in their absence. The role will coordinate day to day operations and ensure all Quality Programs and Standard Operating Procedures are followed and that Turn around Times are met.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Oversees/completes processing of analytical samples according to appropriate SOPs
- Follows all SOPs for area.
- DNA Extractions if needed.
- Open the filters, bio-traps, and filter water if necessary. Primer Dilution and master mix preparation.
- Organize all plates (NGS, qPCR, QuantArray) and meet all turnaround times for reports.
- qPCR template preparations.
- Participates in training of new laboratory technicians.
- Cleans, organizes and maintains supplies for the area.
- Keeps equipment operating by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, performs preventative maintenance.
- Maintains equipment calibrations and oversees equipment repairs.
- Maintains accuracy and reproducibility with minimal errors.
- During the slow season in the qPCR lab, create projects to ensure that the work areas remain operational and that every employee is engaged in tasks.
- Assists Director of Laboratory with daily operations and is trained to fill in during any absence.
- Performs or facilitates performance of all benchwork for any special studies or research projects.
- Keeps laboratory calibration binders and logs up to date.
- Trained on all laboratory positions to be able to fill in as needed.
- Ensures that proper waste disposal is followed.
General Managerial Responsibilities

- Works to resolve any conflicts that may arise between people and areas of company for the most positive outcome.
- Solves problems that arise to the best of their ability before involving upper management.
- Manages staff by communicating job expectations, planning, monitoring, and appraising job results. Shares information with Director of Laboratory.
- Maintains quality service by enforcing quality and customer service standards; analyzing and resolving quality and customer service problems; identifying trends; recommending process improvements. Works with Laboratory Director for strategy development and execution planning.
- Expected to work on average 40 hours per week, with understanding that they may need to stay longer on busy weeks to get any necessary work completed.

Required Skills/Abilities:
- The ability to work with your hands.
- Pipetting experience preferred.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously while adhering to stringent timeline.
- Able to delegate tasks and oversee technician performance.
- Be efficient in laboratory operation to maintain quality and meet turnaround times.
- Capable of working efficiently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a high-quality standard in your work.
- Communicates and cooperates with Laboratory Director and Management.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Laboratory with supervisory experience required (minimum 3 years)
- Bachelor's degree (minimum) in science required.

- Must be able to lift 20 pounds
Additional details:
- Approximately 90% of the job involves bench work or laboratory-related tasks.
- This position is not related to R&D and does not involve modifying any processes.
