with a global leader in the production of high-performance coatings in Itasca, IL.
Location: Itasca IL, relo support provided
Duration: Direct Hire
Schedule: M-F, 1st shift
Compensation: $85,000-$95,000, candidates with more experience/higher compensation requests encouraged to apply as range is flexible based on experience!
Summary: This job will focus on developing and testing water-based barrier coatings for paper and film (Oil and grease resistance/ Moisture vapor resistance / Oxygen transmission rate)
As an Application Chemist you'll conduct on-time application testing, performance evaluation, data analysis and prepare technical reports of various products. Provides technical support including product recommendation, formulation support or troubleshooting for sales teams and customers. Works closely with new product development and customer support.
Responsibilities
- Independently conducts application testing of various products according to standard test methods or coating experiments designed by others.
- Responsible for the successful completion of product development projects in a timely fashion, while following the department guidelines and priorities as set by the supervisor.
- Properly operates all the equipment and lab apparatus in a safe and clean manner.
- Accurately records, organizes and communicates results/data from experiments and testing.
- Performs necessary analysis of data, draws conclusions based on testing results and makes recommendations of products for customers.
- Effectively participates in troubleshooting and technical support for sales team and customers.
- Properly maintains lab areas, storage areas and equipment.
- Responsible for following all applicable waste handling procedures.
- May provide technical training to others.
- Recommends and performs short- and long-term research assignments related to new product development, characterization and laboratory testing.
- Manages daily customer inquiries and responds in a timely manner
- Act as a resource for the Technical Service Group, Quality Control and Production
- Follows all applicable requirements of ISO 9001.

Qualifications
- BS degree (or higher) in chemistry, chemical engineering, material science and/or minimum 5-years' work experience in a development laboratory or specialty chemical technical center.
- Ideal candidate would have work experience in water-based barrier coatings and/or paper mills coatings development (Oil and grease resistance/ Moisture vapor resistance / Oxygen transmission rate) for paper and film- application and testing
- Strong laboratory skills and ability to work on multiple tasks and projects.
- Ability to follow all safety, environmental and regulatory policies and conduct tests and assignments in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.
- Requires an aptitude to use and maintain sensitive test equipment, Moccon, COBB, COF equipment, Sutherland rub, Brookfield, etc.
- Ability to effectively work on individual efforts with moderate supervision and in a team environment.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, reporting of test results in documentation.
- Background in either the Graphic Arts industry or water-based coating applications with barrier technology is a plus.
