Ke Kula ʻo Kamehameha is currently looking for a Principal Strategist. This position will be based out of our Kawaiahaʻo Plaza location and would serve as a key leader on our Uluhiwa/Strategy and Experience team, working alongside its VP and core leadership team.

It would require expertise and skills in the areas of enterprise strategy, assessments, and reporting; drafting high stakes plans and communications on behalf of KS executives; and complex project management involving the intersection and coordination of multiple initiatives and projects of units across the Kamehameha enterprise.

This individual would need to rely upon experiences in working with various Ke Kula ʻo Kamehameha policies, functions, and units, and deftly apply expertise in the various lines of Uluhiwa responsibilities. Another key component of this role would involve assessing risks and opportunities and helping to ensure the wellbeing of Uluhiwa staff and the progress of its kuleana.

Each of these lines of work would apply kuanaʻike Hawaiʻi; Hawaiian community awareness; a deep familiarity with Hawaiian culture and history; and facility in casual conversations in ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi.  

Job Summary

Enables executive leadership and staff to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders.  Highly strategic leadership role that requires a combination of focus and flexibility, the aptitude to engage executive leadership for organization and system transformation, the ability to connect the multitude of work/information/people and the capability to own, shape and drive critical enterprise initiatives internally and externally with stakeholders and organizations. Serves as a key member of the group's core leadership team.

Essential Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Intelligence

  • Facilitates and promotes integration and connections within KS and with other organizations to address complex systems challenges. Plays varied roles in system-impacting relationships and initiatives with other organization leaders locally and beyond.

  • Maintains an outward-in and forward-looking perspective to anticipate external and future happenings that may shape and impact KS' strategic goals and achievement of KS' vision. Fosters the organization's readiness and ability to share this perspective as it influences the volume, scope and timing of the organization's multiple concurrent work pieces and cross-functional/cross-sector interactions & initiatives.

  • Seeks, learns and maintains a menu of tools and methods that support strategy development, design/root cause analysis, project management and change leadership.

  • Prepares for and facilitates (as needed) “critical path” executive meetings (e.g., with CEO, KS executive leaders, Trustees and Hawai'i business leaders) to ensure meeting objectives are realistic and that preparation is appropriate. This responsibility is less about logistics and more about content and appropriateness.

  • Partners with the group's executive leader, and other KS executives where appropriate, to actively influence the design, selection, management and implementation of KS' enterprise portfolio and strategy-level performance measurement, evaluation, monitoring and reporting.

Operations & Management

  • Support the group's executive to oversee & lead the group. Cultivates relationships within the group to strengthen the overall group's cohesion and performance level.

  • Influences staff through setting of shared goals, communication, information sharing and transparency. An excellent negotiator who is able to cultivate and manage relationships with all team members. Fosters and maintains a high performing environment based on teamwork, commitment, accountability, co-operation, collaboration and direct, timely feedback.

  • Oversees the group's portfolio of work.  Provides oversight and guidance to projects critical to the organization that fall within the group's portfolio of work. May include consultation on any and all aspects of a project from planning to implementation, analysis and reporting, business processes, issues/conflict identification and resolution.

  • Provides change leadership to guides, manages, lead and support the group, unit leadership and teams through changes associated with specific organizational initiatives and projects. Agent of change who can effectively adjust approach and efforts accordingly in shifting situations and ambiguity.

  • Proactively identifies issues that could impact the successful execution of the group's commitments. This responsibility involves elevating those issues about which the group's executive should be aware and framing/positioning ideas to resolve the problem/mitigate the risk.

Relationship Management & Communications

  • Manages and maintains key relationships with KS leadership, including executives and CEO Office and other organization leaders to support and mobilize cross-functional initiatives and org-wide priorities that require executive involvement and coordination.

  • Provides strategic consulting, partnership and advisory on strategy development and implementation, knowledge-sharing/dissemination/communication, decision-making and action. Serves as trusted thought partner to executive and group/divisional leadership.

  • Supports communication on behalf of the the group's executive.  Communications range from the executive leader's updates at group meetings to follow up correspondence related to the executive leader's various meetings with the CEO, peer executives, direct reports and staff.

Special Projects/Assignments

  • Independent leadership of special CEO and/or the group's executive leader-initiated projects. Projects may be cross-functional, external/cross-sector, critical, confidential or involve time sensitive issues will need to reside with the office of the group's executive leader and this individual.

Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the requirements listed.

  • Bachelor's degree in Business/Management or other relevant fields

  • Minimum 15 years of relevant experience including project management, enterprise initiative leadership, or operations leadership

  • Minimum 3 years experience as a manager or supervisor

  • Demonstrated leadership ability, sound judgment, emotional intelligence, and ability to positively influence others at all levels of the organization. Effective change management agent.

  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement

  • Strong facilitation and critical thinking skills, for effective problem solving.

  • Solution-oriented, ability to generate ideas to develop innovative solutions.

  • Strong interpersonal skills to include excellent verbal and written communication skills and effective presentation skills to communicate with all levels of clients (executive management, project partners, external constituents, etc.).

  • Appreciation for creativity and innovation to implement initiatives and improve processes.

  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple priorities and conflicting deadlines.

  • Coaching and mentoring skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working in an education setting

Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Frequently sits, perform desk-based computer tasks and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk or hear.

  • Occasionally stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

  • Rarely twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.

Working Conditions (including environmental conditions)   

  • This position may involve traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands to conduct business.

  • Work is conducted in an office environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.

  • Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours but may be conducted in evenings and weekends, as necessary.
