Hālau Kūkalaulama is searching for an ʻĀina Based Learning Manager to work at our Kapālama campus and lead with the ʻĀina Based Learning Coordinator. The ideal candidate is someone who loves the ʻāina and its stewardship work, strives to understand the ʻāina from a Hawaiian cultural lens, possesses a passion for education, and has an ability to connect both from which haumāna can learn and grow their own connections. This position will balance land management with education, co-designing teaching and learning experiences with kumu. Those who demonstrate mālama through their actions; resilience; flexibility in interactions with the ʻāina, keiki, and kumu; and can work independently will do well in this position. Great understanding of Hawaiian culture is integral to this work.
 

This position will work both outdoors and indoors at a desk. Given the nature and amount of outdoor work required of this position, there is some flexibility with work hours and schedule. Due to our work with our families and community, some evening and weekend hours may be required. This is an in-person position that will require occasional travel.

Job Summary
 

Leads and oversees the development and maintenance of campus-based sites for ʻāina-based education and environmental stewardship. Coordinates workshops, events and programs in partnership with educational institutions, cultural practitioners, and community organizations.  Designs and implements curriculum that integrates indigenous knowledge, cultural values, and environmental sustainability that fosters ‘āina-based learning opportunities in alignment with E Ola! learner outcomes.


Essential Responsibilities
 

Site Development, Operations, and Management

  • Develop and implement site use and management plans of ‘āina-based learning areas.
  • Ensure sites are prepared through traditional and modern land use practices and maintain necessary infrastructure.
  • Manage daily operations of learning sites, including coordinating programs, workshops, and events to promote cultural understanding, environmental sustainability, and hands-on learning. Tracks and reports site usage.
  • Serves as liaison between the organization and the community, handling inquiries, providing information, promoting program initiatives.
     

ʻĀina-Based Learning Coordination and Support

  • Create and oversee education master plans for campus ‘āina-based learning sites and community-based collaborations, in alignment with E Ola! learner outcomes to nurture ‘ōiwi leadership.
  • Organize community events, develop educational resources, and adapt curriculum for various audiences, promoting experiential learning and cultural relevance.
  • Foster relationships with community leaders and indigenous practitioners to enhance engagement and involvement in learning and sustainability initiatives.
  • Provide on-site support and training, monitor program quality, manage budgets, and communicate with stakeholders about learning and conservation projects.
     

Research, Evaluation, and Reporting

  • Develop a resource database of offered programs, requiring research and inventory of existing campus ‘āina-based learning sites, conservation, and sustainability programs to prevent duplication.
  • Assess program effectiveness and site utilization regularly, using feedback from various stakeholder groups to refine initiatives.
  • Support campus-wide objectives, aligning efforts to in delivering on strategic measures and goals.  
     

Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the requirements listed.

  • Bachelor's degree in related discipline, or equivalent proven performance.
  • Minimum of 3 years work experience in education-based agriculture, K-12 ‘āina based learning, school sustainability, school-based conservation partnerships, education, natural and cultural resource management, or land operations management or related field.
  • Minimum of 1 year of management, supervisor, or lead experience.
  • Knowledge of Common Core, Next Generation Science Standards and experience with curriculum development, implementation, and monitoring.
  • Knowledge of school garden design and maintenance, along with a passion for farm-to-school issues and practices (traditional and modern), including education, environment, health, agriculture, and sustainability.
  • Excellent oral, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in Google applications and Microsoft Office suite.
  • Aptitude for collaborating with teachers, schools, community groups, volunteers and partnering with various community agencies.
  • Able to take initiative and work independently.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills to identify and resolve existing or potential problems.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment.
  • Able to handle confidential information and understand privacy issues.
  • Strong organizational skills and able to manage multiple priorities efficiently.
  • Knowledge of Hawaiian culture, history, and/or language

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in related discipline.
  • Knowledgeable in farm-to-table initiatives, sustainability concepts, and environmental policies.
  • Strong familiarity in STEM applications in 'āina-based learning and conservation fields.
  • At least one year of K-12 teaching experience, including mentoring, or coaching in standards-based K-12 education.
     

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently sits, perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently stand and/or walk and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 100 pounds.
  • Frequently twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.
  • Frequently operate and maintain common yard and farm machinery such as lawnmowers, weed-eaters, tillers, hand tools

Working Conditions

  • Work is conducted in an office environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.
  • Work is conducted outdoors and in areas of uneven terrain.
  • Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours, but evening and weekend hours are often required to meet goals and objectives.
