Kamehameha Schools is currently looking for a Manager of Employee Benefits. Our ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills and be strategic and forward thinking. In addition to having Benefits and Retirement experience, we are also looking for someone who has experience with Pensions (frozen and/or active).

Job Summary

The Benefits Manger oversees all areas of benefits including health & welfare, retirement and wellness. Direct, supervises, and trains the Benefits team members. Oversees the governance and operating model for all benefits programs to ensure compliance with state and federal laws and regulations. Responsible for managing relationships with external and internal partners.

Essential Responsibilities

Retirement Plan Governance & Oversight

  • The Benefits Manager has responsibility for the administrative aspects of the retirement plan governance; this will include advising the Retirement Administrative Sub-committee. Oversees proper administration of several retirement plans including 401(k), pension and 457(b) plans. Ensures that retirement plans are in compliance with KS policy, state and federal laws and regulations. Ensures that all required benefits reporting is completed in a timely manner including notification to plan participants.

Vendor Oversight & Management

  • Manage business relationships with consultants, auditors, and plan vendors to support proper plan administration. Ensure vendors are in compliance and adhering to established Service Level Agreements (SLA's). Works with brokers to negotiate rates and contract terms for group insurance policies, third party administrators and services, and consultants. Leads annual vendor evaluation and scorecard process.

Benefit Planning & Design

  • Ensures benefit programs are competitive and controls costs by managing benefit design, vendors, and streamlining processes/systems necessary to maintain programs. Works with Senior Benefits Analyst to recommend and analyze benefit changes and new programs consistent with employee feedback, peer comparability and fiscal responsibility. Works with Director of Compensation & Benefits and other internal partners to design the Total Rewards strategy. Serves as the primary benefits support to the Controller's office for fiscal budgeting.

Benefits Communication

  • Responsible for all benefit communications and partners with the Communications department to create a comprehensive benefit communication strategy.

Wellness

  • Oversees the Wellness program and activities. Works closely with the Benefits & Wellness Administrator to develop new programs and strategies to improve the overall wellness of KS employees. Responsible for the Wellness dashboard (metrics) and budget.
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the requirements listed.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources, Business, or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible and related experience.
  • Minimum of 1 year of management or lead experience.
  • Demonstrates exceptional client service/client relations skills in working with employees as well as internal and external partners resulting in a positive and collaborative environment.
  • Demonstrates an expert knowledge of the full range of benefit laws and regulations including ERISA, COBRA, HIPPAA, FMLA, ADA and all others.
  • Demonstrates an in-depth understanding of the theories and principles of benefits design and budgeting.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the broader business implications of decisions.
  • Demonstrates an expert ability to manage complex risks, liability and resolve systemic issues.
  • Demonstrated negotiation skills with brokers and vendors in benefit plan design and costs.
  • Demonstrated ability to gain respect of parties involved in negotiations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of statistical concepts, methods and data collection procedures used to make practical and meaningful recommendations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of retirement plan governance and fiduciary responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of vendor management and oversight including the development and administration of Service Level Agreements (SLA's).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of theories and principles of people management and motivation.
  • Strong oral and written skills to prepare comprehensive and clear written documents, presentations and policies.
  • Excellent working knowledge of technology and proficiency in the use of spreadsheet, word processing, data management, and presentation applications.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills to manage competing priorities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in an educational setting or a work environment with large numbers of temporary and/or part-time employees.
  • Knowledge and experience with employers subject to the provisions of the Hawaii Pre-paid Healthcare Act.
  • Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) designation from the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently sits, perform desk-based computer tasks and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk or hear.
  • Occasionally stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Rarely twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.

Working Conditions

  • This position may involve traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands to conduct business.
  • Work is conducted in an office environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.
  • Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours.

Based on the compensation range provided below, salaries are commensurate with job-related experience, skills and competencies, education, internal equity, length of work year, and other organizational needs.
