Kamehameha Schools Hawaii campus seeks to hire Kumu for our High School's 2025 Kauluhala Summer Academy. This is a temporary, seasonal position.

Job Summary

Designs, plans, and facilitates learning experiences that are Hawaiian culture-based, dynamic, nurturing, designated course/grade-level, and engaging and student-centered which helps haumāna (students) gain strength form their identity as 'oiwi Hawai'i. Attends program-specific professional development workshops and applies innovative educational strategies to foster a playtime of deep, applied learning and creative exploration. Plans and coordinates field trips and off-campus educational activities. Regularly assesses student progress and uses data to modify curriculum and instruction. Prepares and submits weekly progress reports that chart student progress. Models mutual respect and enforces Summer Program rules and regulations in a positive and formative manner. Effectively communicates with students, parents, colleagues, and Program Coordinators.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Designs, plans, and facilitates learning experiences that are Hawaiian culture-based, dynamic, nurturing, designated course/grade-level, and engaging for students. Attends program-specific professional development workshops and applies innovative educational strategies to foster a playtime of deep, applied learning and creative exploration.
  • Regularly assesses student progress and uses data to modify curriculum and instruction. Prepares and submits weekly progress reports that chart student progress.
  • Plans and coordinates field trips and off-campus educational activities.
  • Models mutual respect and enforces Summer Program rules and regulations in a positive and formative manner.
  • Effectively communicates with students, parents, colleagues, and Program Coordinators.
  • For Kumu responsible for outdoors programs, such as Kumuola, may maintain the outdoors site which includes clearing and cleaning the site and may include duties such as mowing and cutting grass, plants and trees; cleaning the work areas, removing trash, etc.

Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the requirements listed.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education or a closely related field of primary instructional responsibilities.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience teaching in an applicable subject area.
  • Knowledge of culturally relevant, age-appropriate educational strategies.
  • Ability to attend five days of pre-program professional development.
  • Ability to manage small and large groups of students in classroom and field learning activities.
  • Possesses effective communication skills that build and strengthen relationships with and between students, faculty/staff, 'ohana, and administrators.
  • Employs excellent organizational skills to coordinate numerous student activities and meet varied deadlines.
  • Experienced with cultural protocol and has working knowledge of the Hawaiian language.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Summer program teaching experience.
  • Previous teaching experience in any of the following areas: Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, Math, Literacy.
  • Familiarity with Hawaiian culture-based methodologies, 'aina-based learning, and/or Moenaha.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to Hawaiian culture and Christian values.
  • Possesses a flexible growth mindset focused on cultural innovation to facilitate learning.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently sits, perform desk-based computer tasks and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk or hear.
  • Occasionally stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Rarely twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.

Working Conditions

  • This position may involve traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands to conduct business.
  • Work is conducted in an office/school environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.
  • Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours but evening and weekend hours are often required to meet goals and objectives.
