Kamehameha Schools Maui Campus is seeking a Cook to join our Food Services team to help provide locally sourced 'ono (delicious) meals for our K-12 haumana. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter and team player, with a strong sense of Aloha (love or compassion) for our students, faculty, staff, team, and the meals that are prepared. We desire candidates who model ku'upau, and are aligned with KS' core values of pilina (fostering of meaningful relationships, particularly to our community and to the 'aina).
This is a 11 month, full-time position with a Monday through Friday 6:00am-2:30pm work schedule. *This is subject to change based on programs and varying events.
Job Summary
Responsible for preparation and cooking of various food items. Trains and directs Cook IV in performance of a variety of services such as cleaning and prepping, food safety and sanitation procedures, food service transport, and line set up. Oversees student helpers and volunteers. Assists with inventory control procedures.
Essential Responsibilities
- Assists in preparation of meals and clean up of the kitchen.
- Prepares fruits, vegetables, salad dressings, condiments and related items for all assigned meals. Prepares and maintains fruit/salad/sandwich bars and coffee station. Portion prepares breads, rolls, desserts as required. Prepares and cooks hot vegetables, starch, soups, and vegetarian option as assigned.
- Follows proper food safety and sanitation procedures including but not limited to the storage and handling of raw and left-over food products, the sanitizing of equipment and utensils, and personal hygiene practices.
- Assists with daily ordering of fruits, vegetables and other related items with outside vendors.
- Trains and oversees the work of the Cook IV and student helpers.
- Assists with the coordination and the preparation of special function take-out meals including the distribution and return of equipment and utensils.
- Maintains inventory of pantry equipment and supplies. Coordinates and assists with all other pantry related tasks. Notifies Sous Chef of equipment malfunction and safety problems.
- Assists in setting up, servicing, and taking down for special dining service for Food Service Requests, as needed.
- Performs primary duties in absence of Cook II.
Position Requirements
Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the requirements listed.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of 1 years of related work experience.
- Valid Driver's License.
- Ability to obtain the National Food Safety and Sanitation Certification within the first two weeks of start date.
- Good computer knowledge and basic math skills for taking inventory and ordering proper amounts of food.
- Effective interpersonal skills for dealing with staff and management.
- Good organizational and planning skills.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
- Ability to plan out daily tasks efficiently and to manage multiple tasks.
Physical and Mental Requirements
- Frequently stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry items up to 50 pounds; push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 300 pounds.
- Occasionally twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, and reach for supplies and equipment.
Working Conditions (including environmental conditions)
- Work is conducted in close proximity to hot equipment in humid surroundings.
- Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours but evening and weekend hours are often required for special events.
