Job Summary:
Assists physicians with all routine and complex orthopedic procedures to include applying and removing casts, splints, bandages and ready made braces. Maintains order of cast room, as well as ordering and stocking cast room supplies. Oversees orthopedic technicians in application and removal of immobilizations.

Essential Responsibilities:


  • Performs casting procedures in acute and follow-up treatment of fractures, sprains, and arthritis in hildren as well as adults in Cast Room. In applying casts, takes precautions to avoid complications such as pressure sores and constriction of circulation due to swelling.

  • Provides assistance to physician with casting procedures in Operating Room, Emergency Department or on inpatient floor, in addition to clinic. Assists physician with minor oupatient (surgical) procedures.

  • Performs and monitors simple and complex casting procedures in acute and follow-up treatment of fractures, sprains, and arthritis in children as well as adults in Cast Room. Applies and removes/applications on infants and toddlers. Applies and removes casts, both plaster and synthetic, with and without assistance per physicians orders.

  • Accommodates cardio-vascular physicians in management of diabetic extremity problems utilizing proper immobilization techniques to avoid further circulatory compromise.

  • Applies and removes splints, appliances, bandages, and tapings. Seeks help with cast removal/applications on infants and toddler.

  • Assists with evaluation of new casting materials and braces giving feedback to Orthopedics and Supervisor comparing cost, quality and ease of application.

  • Assures that supply/application fees are charged properly on outpatient visit records as well as ancillary forms for inpatients.

  • Assists physician, physician assistant, other orthopedic technicians or nursing staff with treatments. Removes sutures in post-op patient using aseptic techniques. Measures and applies knee braces to include anterior/posterior cruciate ligament sports braces as well as range of motion braces for Sports Medicine Clinic according to orthopedists specifications. Applies total contact amputation cast for vascular compromised/diabetic patients under direct supervision of orthopedist. Applies and removes splints, appliances, bandages, and tapings. Provides help with cast removals/applications on infants and toddlers.

  • Assures proper transport of patients by wheelchair or gurney and lifting of patients. Ensures proper use of body mechanics at all times.

  • Initiates skin care following removal of immobilization.

  • Prepares patient with explanation of procedure or examination, checks for level of understanding. Allays patients fears and anxieties associated with equipment and procedures to elicit cooperation. Provides patient information handout on care of cast and documents same in patients medical record.

  • Requests and maintains par levels of supplies with weeky ordering by computer. Fulfills Podiatric, Sports Medicine, Foot/Ankle, Hand Clinic and General Ortho supply needs. Rotates stock.

  • Maintains safety and cleansing of all cast cutters and removal of vacuum bags to ensure optimum performance of equipment. Changes cutter blades as needed to maintain equipment at optimum level of function and safety.

  • Soaks, scrubs, counts, and prepares instruments for sterilization daily using body/fluid precaution guidelines. Monitors return of same.

  • Responsible for notifying attending physicians or nursing supervisor of problems regarding patient care or staff performance. Accepts adjustments in assignments.

  • Maintains Cast Room in neat and orderly condition with emphasis on safety at all times for patients as well as employees. Employs universal precautions with every procedure assessing proper disposal of drainage soaked dressings and casts in Ecolobags. Assure the Cast room is maintained in clean and orderly condition with emphasis on safety at all times for patients as well as staff and providers.

  • Greets patients in professional, pleasant, courteous manner, using first and last name. Directs, escorts, or wheels patient into exam room.

  • Responds to Orthopedist on-call to immobilize Emergency Department patients during day when necessary.

Basic Qualifications: Experience

  • Minimum two (2) years of experience assisting in orthopedic procedures.

  • Minimum one (1) year of orthopedic technician experience.

Education
  • Graduate of Medical Assistant Program; or equivalent related experience.
License, Certification, Registration
  • Basic Life Support from American Heart Association
Additional Requirements:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in adaptability, change management, decision making, customer service, influence, interpersonal relations, oral communication, problem solving, systems thinking, teamwork, and written communication.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in word processing, spreadsheet, and database PC applications.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).
  • Certified Orthopaedic Technologist (OTC) by the National Association of Orthopaedic Technologists (NAOT).
