Job Summary:
Under indirect supervision, provides patient handling assistance; supports and functions as part of hospital and clinic nursing/patient care services team; collaborates with unit/department with guidance from nurse responsible for care of patient where assistance is needed; works in pairs as part of lift team; instructs other staff on proper use of lift equipment; provides assistance in tasks of repositioning, transferring and transporting patients in collaboration with nursing/patient care services staff; operates and utilizes specialized patient care handling equipment that assists in lifting, transferring, and transporting patients in accordance with manufacturers and hospitals guidelines to minimize injury risks.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Functions as a member of lift team which consists of two trained technicians working together; is assigned high risk cases; provides assistance to nursing/patient care services staff in safe lifting, repositioning, transferring and transporting of patients who have been identified as appropriate for this service.
- Instructs other staff on ongoing basis on safe and proper use of lift equipment and correct body mechanics; problem-solves and advises on the safest and most efficient way to utilize lift equipment; utilizes proper body mechanics and lifting techniques; observes hospital and clinic protocols.
- Operates and utilizes specialized patient handling equipment, transfer devices, and protective equipment in compliance with hospital/clinic policies, vendor specifications, and patient handling and transporting protocols.
- Cooperates with and works collaboratively with the nursing/patient care services team; functions as part of a team to lower critical incidents and risk factors; adheres to department and hospital/clinic policies and procedures.
- Ensures availability and safe condition of lift equipment; tracks and inventories lift equipment.
- Demonstrates appropriate judgment in all aspects of patient care.
- Maintains patient and employee safety as a basic premise of all tasks performed.
- Recognizes needs and concerns of members, co-workers, and physicians while maintaining positive working relationships.
- Demonstrates sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities in area of specialization.
- Demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to provide culturally sensitive care and/or service.
- Performs other duties and accepts responsibility as assigned.
Basic Qualifications: Experience
- N/A
- High school diploma; or equivalent combination of education (lesser) & experience may be considered in lieu of requirements.
- Basic Life Support from American Heart Association
- Demonstrated knowledge of patient lifting or transport.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in oral communication, written communication, interpersonal relations, teamwork, detail-oriented, group process facilitation, initiative, customer service, adaptability, conflict resolution, decision making, time management, problem-solving, and ability to instruct others.
- Talking to co-workers, customers, outside vendors, and on the telephone.
- Reading, writing, speaking, understanding English.
- Training/giving and receiving instructions.
- Mathematical ability, attention to detail (e.g. organization, prioritization, proofing), concentration, and alertness.
- Prior work experience with patient care handling in a health care setting.
- Rehabilitation services experience.
- Knowledge of basic body mechanics, related patient lifting or transport.
- Post high school coursework in human anatomy, medical terminology, and rehabilitation.
- Minimum six (6) months of experience with bed side patient care handling in an acute/long term health care setting preferred.
