Critical Care Medical Director of the Coronary Intensive Care Unit

Pulmonary/CCM Division, Intermountain Medical Center, Salt Lake Valley, Utah

Position Information

  • A well-trained BC critical care physician is sought for the position of Medical Director of the Coronary Intensive Care Unit (CICU) at Intermountain Medical Center (FTE 0.2); training in cardiology and critical care desired, but will consider applications from other critical care medicine trained physicians.
  • Prior experience in cardiovascular critical care preferred, including experience managing patients on temporary and/or long term mechanical support (ECMO, LVAD, Impella, IABP, TAH).
  • Established academic critical care physicians are encouraged to apply. FTE 0.3 protected time for research is provided to physicians who are academically productive on an ongoing basis. Intermountain supports a grants award office that facilitates applications for externally funded research.
  • Clinical care at FTE 0.5 to 0.8 (depending on whether academic protected time is provided). Includes care of critically ill cardiac and medical patients in the 16 bed CICU at Intermountain Medical Center supervising a team of cardiac critical care advanced practice providers (nurse practitioners and physicians' assistants).
    • About 8 to 10 daytime weeks per year in the CICU and 2 to 4 daytime weeks per year as the second attending in the thoracic ICU (post cardiac surgery)
    • 3 to 4 nights per month covering cardiovascular critical care
  • Bedside and didactic teaching of CICU nurses, respiratory therapists, and clinical pharmacists.
  • Critical care support for patients with primary cardiac diseases in the CICU in close collaboration with cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons. Experience with veno-veno and veno-arterial ECMO, LVAD and RVAD, and heart transplant patients is preferred but not required. Broad experience in critical care is also important since the CICU shares the care of patients with 4 other ICUs at Intermountain Medical Center as census requires.
  • As Medical Director of the CICU responsibilities include leading a group of critical care physicians working in the CICU collaborating with the nurse manager, leading and participating in continous improvement projects, and collaborating with Intermountain critical care leadership on the shared goal of optimizing ICU care delivery.

  • Member of the Intermountain Pulmonary and Critical Care Division in the Department of Medicine, or Cardiology depending on training, with opportunities for clinical/adjunct appointment at the University of Utah.
