The Inova Alexandria Hospital is seeking a Full-time Registered Nurse Unit Supervisor for our Medical/Surgical Unit. This is a 12 hrs. (3x) days shift.

23 North is a 52- bed semi-private unit that serves a broad spectrum of medical needs. Patient length of stay is typically under one week. You will be part of a dynamic team that thrives on shared governance, ensuring that our core values of “Patient Always” and “One Team” are at the center of care. As a Registered Nurse (RN) Unit Supervisor, you will serve as a front line leader who is accountable for delivering highly reliable results related to quality and best practices to improve the clinical operations of the unit. To help achieve our mission, you will embrace, use and understand the research behind nursing practice and quality tools. Supporting unit based shared governance and decentralized decision making structures and processes is of vital importance. Acting as a role model who leads by example in delivering "Service Always" and in making patient experience a priority on units of responsibility is required. Job Responsibilities

- Conducts effective safety huddles by making use of all relevant information and making appropriate decisions to ensure optimal outcomes.
- Ensures all audits are completed accurately and delivered when specified.
- Conducts or appropriately delegates all safety rounds (e.g. Falls, Central Lines, Foleys, bed alarms, time-outs, etc.).
- Reviews core measures, key performance indicators and other metrics relevant to unit/patient populations.
- Ensures environmental rounds and operational checks are completed as well as follow-up with relevant departments or people to close out identified issues.
- Participates in emergency and safety preparedness drills/trainings as required.
- Participates in simulation labs and Operating Room safety stand-downs.
- Ensures adherence to The Joint Commission standards that are relevant to areas of responsibility and ensures that team members are knowledgeable of related standards.
- Contributes to professional decision making to support and/or implement unit based quality improvement work and strategic outcomes.
- Serves as role model to others in communication to patients, identifying concerns, diffusing potentially difficult situations and facilitating resolution.
- Recognizes, coaches and mentors staff in all elements of the care delivery model.
- Provides oversight of Registered Nurse (RN) rounding to ensure patient satisfaction and identify areas of opportunity.
- Conducts quality checks to ensure that intentional and purposeful patient rounding is completed.
- Recognizes, coaches and mentors team members as appropriate.
- Conducts quality checks to ensure compliance and team member adherence to high quality ISHAPED handoff and ensures effective communication with the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU).
- Escalates barriers to unit leader or other appropriate parties as necessary.
- Conducts and ensures that Patient, Medical Director and RN rounding is completed for areas of responsibility.
- Participates in the analysis of unit based service outcomes (i.e. HCAHPS, non-CAHPS, etc.) as well as development of action plans that lead to systematic improvements in outcomes.
- Integrates evidence based practice and research into clinical and operational practice.
- Serves as a Physician Liaison and primary information resource/contact for unit(s) of responsibility.
- Continually communicates with team members to update them on priorities and areas of concern.
- Collaborates with Case Management, Pre-Op and PACU areas, or other necessary involved parties, to ensure that discharge needs are in place to provide smooth transition of patient flow.
- Completes Charge Nurse reports/checklists as requested.
- Makes effective clinical decisions based on education and experience.
- Proactively supplies information for bed and/or staffing meetings.
- Accurately assesses current state while forecasting staffing/supply needs and working to proactively resolve staffing discrepancies.
- Contributes to the completion of annual evaluations as delegated by unit leadership.
- Participates in the disciplinary process for team members, when applicable, by providing necessary input to performance deficiencies.
- Participates in the interview and hiring process for new team members.
- Meets with Unit Directors and Nurse Managers daily to review overall shift needs/accomplishments.
- Manages conflicts effectively.
- Provides individual coaching and counseling to clinical staff on critical processes, standards and problem solving.

- Communicates expectations effectively. Advocates for and supports the clinical staff and promotes an environment of mutual trust.
- Conducts high quality shift huddles by communicating strategic priorities related to target, actual and gap barriers in addition to small tests of change, results of rounding, challenges, celebrations and other matters.
- Rounds on staff continually and serves to remove or escalate barriers to providing quality care while enhancing staff engagement.
- Supports staff engagement in their work by recognizing those who have exceeded expectations.
- Coordinates staff breaks or other staff coverage issues (e.g. transport, surge, etc.).

Additional Requirements

Experience: A minimum of 1 year of Registered Nurse clinical experience in the acute care setting

Education:
- BSN from an accredited school of nursing.
- If RN has an Associate's Degree (ADN); must complete BSN within 5 years of start date.
- BLS for Healthcare Provider certification required from American Heart Association (AHA)
Completion of revised Charge Nurse workshop within first 90 days
Licensure:
RN licensed, or eligible to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia as a RN
