Job Summary: Under the supervision of a pathologist, assists in the preparation and performance of human surgical specimen dissections received in the department and utilize histological techniques to prepare tissue sections for examination and diagnosis by pathologists. Interfaces with internal and external units/departments to receive tissue, organ, and other specimen samples. Responsible for the accessioning, organization, and electronic tracking of received specimens. Assures proper maintenance of equipment, provision of supplies, and cleanliness of the surgical pathology area. Performs administrative functions as required.

Job Essentials: 

  • Under the supervison of a pathologist, assists in the preparation and performance of human surgical specimen dissections.
  • Accessions and efficiently organizes all specimens received.  Electronically enters all specimen information into pathology computer system.
  • Obtains the clinical history including scans, x-rays, laboratory data, etc, as indicated after consulting with the pathologist(s).
  • In association with the pathologist(s), describes gross anatomic features, dissects surgical specimens and prepares tissues for processing.
  • Responsible for assuring proper maintenance of equipment, provision of adequate supplies, and cleanliness of the surgical pathology area.
  • Prints cassettes and slides using computer system.
  • Trouble-shoots problem or missing specimens.
  • Prepares specimens for send-outs; completes reference lab requisitions, attaches insurance information and diagnoses.  Packages specimen properly for transport by courier.
  • Uses laboratory equipment to process tissue. Cuts thin histological sections and mounts tissue sections on glass microscrope slides. Fixes, stains and cover slips slides.
  • Demonstatrates tissue elements by routine staining with qualitative values.
  • Prepares frozen sections for Pathologists' immediate review using cryostat.
  • Prepares staining solutions.
  • Carries out quality control procedures.
  • Logs patient specimens in logbook accurately and legibly. Makes sure all work is completed within turn-around time guidelines.
  • Demonstrates skill and accuracy in labeling slides and containers, and completing all paperwork necessary for tissue preparation.
  • Prepares tissue and paperwork for reference laboratories.
  • Files tissue blocks and slides for future retrieval.
  • Maintains the histology laboratory in proper order according to all regulatory requirements for quality, cleanliness and safety.
  • Signs out and files signed out slides and cassettes.
  • Keeps track of pathology files. 
  • Answers telephone calls for pathology and other department offices using excellent phone etiquette. Transfers calls and/or takes messages for department managers and pathologists. 
  • Perform other duties as requested.

 

Education Requirements:

  • Minimun of Associates degree in a laboratory science (chemical or biological science) or equivalent; B.S degree preferred
  • 1 year of experience in a pathology laboratory setting required.
  • Histology Technologist (HTL) or Histology Technician (HT) – Board Certified (ASCP), preferred.
