Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Cancer Center Oncology Data Supervisor, the Oncology Data Specialist- Certified (ODS-C) is responsible for the collection, management, and analysis of data on persons with the diagnosis of a malignant or neoplastic (cancer). Oncology Data Specialists analyze complex patient cancer data, abstract, code and report cancer statistics. The Oncology Data Specialist must ensure accuracy, consistency, completeness, and quality of the cancer data that is abstracted for use in cancer control, survival, epidemiological research, public health program planning and patient care improvement. The ODS-C uses recognized cancer disease coding classifications (ICD-0, etc.) staging conventions and methodologies, they must identify, code, stage, and collect treatment and survival information for each patient. The ODS-C must use SEER ICD-10 case-finding codes and standard setter techniques to identify cases. They must understand the morphology of the disease, staging criteria, treatment modalities, and evidence based NCCN guidelines to accurately abstract each patient record. The ODS participates in quality performance improvement activities as needed regarding coding accuracy, completeness, data quality and integrity; identify issues in correct sequencing of codes. Responsible for the maintenance of the Cancer Registry in accordance with the requirements of the New Jersey State Cancer Registry (NJSCR) and the standards of the American College of Surgeons, Commission on Cancer (ACoS/CoC), NAPBC National Accreditation Program, Breast Centers, & NAPRC- National Accreditation Program, Rectal Cancer.

Status: Part Time (20 hours per week minimum - benefits eligible)
Shift: Day
Hours: 8am - 4 pm (variable) 

 

Job Essentials: The ideal candidate will meet the following requirements and competencies.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, pathology, anatomy and physiology
  • Knowledge of ICD-O (International Classification of Diseases - Oncology) coding
  • Working knowledge of ACoS/CoC Cancer Program guidelines
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Skilled user of KACI and other various cancer registry/cancer program software systems
  • Skilled user of Microsoft Office programs and comfortable in using windows based computer systems
  • Team player but able to work independently as needed
  • 100% Remote Position, High-speed internet access and experience with remote access, set-up, and troubleshooting technical issues. Secure home office HIPAA compliant.

 

License/Certification/Registry:

  • Oncology Data Specialist-Certified ODS-C or ODS-C Eligible
