Posting Summary UCHC is seeking a per diem Mental Health Staff Nurse (RN) for the Northern State Prison in Newark, New Jersey. The Staff Nurse utilizes the nursing process to meet a variety of health care needs with ambulatory care as a primary focus. Works with a variety of health care professionals and security officers in a correctional environment. Frequently functions guided by nursing protocols. Functions as a team leader as assigned. Demonstrates competency in assessment and identification of the psychological and physical health of adults (18 to 64 years), and geriatrics (65+) all population groups and their personal strengths. Identifies inmate-centered goals and nursing objectives and implements prescribed interventions and solutions for the identified problems.
  • Provides direct and indirect nursing care to meet physiological, psychosocial and emotional needs of the inmate-patient including adults (18 to 64 years), and geriatrics (65+) within the framework established by the correctional system.
  • Uses psychiatric standards of nursing practice and classification of mental disorders: to develop inmate treatment plans with specific goals and interventions delineating nursing actions unique to each inmate's needs.
  • Implements nursing actions that promote, maintain or restore physical and mental health of all age groups.
  • Evaluates inmate responses in collaboration with multi-disciplinary care providers to ensure quality inmate care.
  • Performs additional duties that are directly related to the workings of the milieu and its safety, as demonstrated by documentation in specific paperwork and by supervisory observations.
  • Assumes responsibility for his/her continuing education and professional development and contributes to the professional growth of co-workers.
