What You Will Do:

Under the general direction of the Nurse Director, has responsibility for providing comprehensive, family-centered breastfeeding instruction and information to participants in FRMC's Community Breastfeeding Education Programs and to the post-partum clients both in-house and after discharge. Provides educational programs for the nursing staff, nursing students and medical students in reference to breastfeeding.

FUNCTIONS:

Adherence to Medical Center/Department Policy

Maintain acceptable attendance/punctuality records in accordance with FRMC policy.

Follows dress code.

Observes confidentiality.

Adheres to safety policies.

Participates in continuing education and clinical competency as appropriate.

Follows Department of Nursing and Medical Center policies and procedures.

Precepts new employees and students as defined in FRMC's preceptor policy.

Patient and Staff Education

Actively instructs and assists breastfeeding mothers on the post-partum unit.

Provides follow-up phone calls after discharge to breastfeeding clients who have been seen by the Lactation Educator.

Provides outpatient support to breastfeeding clients on an as needed basis. Responds to all calls received in regards to breastfeeding concerns.

Actively instructs breastfeeding class participants utilizing the principles of adult education and the nursing process in order to meet the needs of the adult learner.

Conducts the breastfeeding educational programs within the hospital facilities or at community sites as indicated.

Maintains current knowledge in areas covered in the community breastfeeding education program. Incorporates evidence-based practice into daily patient care.

Participates in an on-going evaluation of the breastfeeding class and assists the Director with updating procedures, format and content of the breastfeeding program by utilizing current standards of care and evidence-based practices.

Service Coordination

Actively participates in the marketing process of the breastfeeding programs as assigned.

Serves as a liaison for department volunteers.

Ensures that adequate supply levels for department folders and class materials and equipment are maintained.

Establishes and maintains relationships with the public and such professional groups as may be appropriate.

Information Processing and Documentation

Communicates patient information to caregivers.

Documents information.

Charges for equipment, supplies, and treatment.

Assists Nurse Director with QA data collection, documentation, and interpretation.

Care of Environment & Equipment

Maintains unit.

Maintains equipment.

Interpersonal Skills

Communicates with peers, other health team members, patients, visitors and students.

Maintains adaptability.

Supports unit team.

Resolves problems.

Participates in new employee orientation.

Demonstrates service excellence and ACE.

What You Will Need:

Must possess a current license as a Registered Nurse from the State of Ohio.

Must be currently certified in CPR (and recertified bi-annually).

Lactation Counselor or Consultant Certification required (or obtained within 12 months of hire).

Must be knowledgeable regarding the nursing process and its application, including the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care.

Prefer minimum of one year's experience in pertinent clinical specialty. Nurses who do not meet this requirement must obtain experience through competency based orientation (CBO).

Possess a service orientation.

Works independently as well as functioning as a team member.

Capable of adapting to changing environment.

Represents FRMC to the community. Acts as an ambassador and advocate for FRMC.

Knowledgeable of equipment used in pertinent clinical area (see unit-specific competency base orientation [CBO], location of reference manuals, and resources for consultation.)
