Responsibilities The Registered Nurse Women's Health (WH) Breast Imaging (BI) is responsible for providing competent, evidence-based care to assigned patients. This nurse has fundamental experience with the situations in which they are ultimately expected to perform, integrating theoretical concepts, basic critical thinking skills, and technically skilled practice. The WH Breast Imaging RN will serve as the main point of contact and clinical coordinator for veterans undergoing evaluation of abnormal mammogram. Provides patient management, care coordination, and disposition planning for Veterans, including but not limited to addressing mammography, diagnostic imaging, and breast biopsies to streamline the processes for breast care. Assists Veterans, family members, and caregivers with receiving the most appropriate options and services to meet their complex health care needs. Coordinates care with multiple providers across all levels and sites of care such as but not limited to general surgery, radiation oncology, oncology, and/or other modalities throughout radiology. Coordination also includes assuring services interface within the Veterans Affairs (VA) and community programs to provide continuity of care to Veterans. Provides oversight of the patient's journey through the diagnostic and treatment continuum, ensuring that all steps in the process are scheduled, timely and completed, while tracking the plan of care. Coordinates and facilitates, as needed, WH care including contacting the Veteran, facilitating appointments and authorizations, tracking receipt of test results and other medical documentation, and notifying providers of needed follow up care. The WH Breast Imaging Nurse will interface with outside referral agencies and ensure that their business and clinical practices follow regulatory standards. Anticipates and implements preventive patient care measures. Provides guidance and education to patients and caregivers and collaborates with other professionals at all levels. Addresses psychosocial, as well as nursing and medical needs of patients and their families/caregivers, through participation with the interdisciplinary care team. Ensures the plan of care and educational requirements are individualized and tailored specifically to support each individual patient's needs. Reports status of service needs and contributes to problem resolution and modification of processes as necessary. Supports the WH program and evaluates care and outcomes to ensure timely and appropriate provision of gender specific services. Advocates for holistic care through patient/family education and provider interaction and implements an educational plan to meet the patient care needs. Assists radiologists in all aspects of interventional breast procedures. Communicates results of these procedures with the patients, answers patient questions knowledgably and helps facilitate next steps of patient care after consultation with the radiologist. Enhances awareness of the role of WH Breast Imaging Nurse throughout the facility. May assist as a chaperone during breast ultrasounds/imaging/pelvic examinations. Monitors clinical mammography screening breast reminders to facilitate scheduling of recommended screening mammograms. Serves as a resource to patients, ancillary and support services to control and prevent inappropriate mammogram/breast imaging scheduling, thus decreasing no-shows, increasing utilization of appointments (including reminder letters and calls), resulting in increased patient satisfaction. Physical Requirements: The population of male and female Veterans served ranges from the adult, age 18, to the elderly adult, age 65 and over. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Qualifications Basic Requirements: English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U. S. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE); OR Individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bri
