Summary The Registered Nurse, Nursing Officer of the Day (NOD) directs position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to the management of complex patient care. Responsibilities The Registered Nurse (NOD) demonstrates the ability to plan and organize the delivery of care to assure continuity of care and peer accountability for practice, including access to care and discharge planning. The NOD is skilled in the delivery of patient care and serves as the facility nursing expert at all hours to support, provide and facilitate emergency medical support throughout the facility. The incumbent serves as the facility expert for all patient care areas in identifying escalating medical crises, environmental factors, and in allocating staffing resources appropriately throughout the facility to meet the care needs of Veterans. The Nursing Officer of the Day (NOD) assumes authority, responsibility, and accountability for managing and directing employees, staffing units, and allocating resources as necessary during weekends, holidays, and after-hours tours during the absence of nursing management/leadership. The NOD is responsible for rounding and is a consultant to providers. Collaborates with the Administrative Officer of the Day (AOD) and other members of the interdisciplinary team as needed for decisions related to on-going patient care and actions taken in emergency situations and disasters. The NOD provides programmatic outcomes to nursing leadership to assist with improving organizational processes and the delivery of patient care. Other duties include, but not limited to the following: Leads the provision of nursing care to patients with complex care needs utilizing the nursing process in alignment with the ANA Standards of Nursing Practice. Applies clinical knowledge/judgment to lead staff involvement in planning, decision-making, and evaluating outcomes within the immediate practice setting. Functions as a leader, with demonstrated outcomes, for the immediate practice setting. Guides, develops, and supports staff from a leadership perspective using professional standards of care, scientific evidence, and practice to evaluate programs and/or service activities. Evaluates current practice and formulates outcomes for groups of patients and/or organizational processes within an area of expertise. Demonstrates advanced leadership at the systems level that is sustainable, experience, and creative approaches to management of complex situations. Uses clinical knowledge and judgment to promote staff involvement in planning, decision-making, and evaluating outcomes. Improves Veteran/patient driven care by resolving experience issues such as coordination of care, timeliness or process issues, common themes of dissatisfaction, or environment of care concerns for the immediate practice setting. Applies patient, family, and caregiver knowledge, values, and beliefs into care delivery without judgement or discrimination. Serves as an advocate for patients, families, and caregivers, improving outcomes for the immediate practice setting. Leads the implementation of high reliability principles and I CARE values to increase consistency of care delivered and improve patient outcomes. Performs other duties as assigned in functional statement. Qualifications Basic Requirements: English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U. S. C. 7403(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE); OR Individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program. Upon achievement of a State license, the individual may be appointed on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6); OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant an appointment as a Nurse who has completed an associated degree/entry level Nursing education program. Credit for foreign nursing education higher that associate degree/entry level requires a formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation accepted by VA such as International Consultants of Delaware (
