Responsibilities This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application. The Inpatient Nurse Educator is accountable to the Inpatient Associate Chief Nurse. The Inpatient Nurse Educator supports the development of frontline staff, specifically to include primary population of nurses and fosters empowerment through knowledge to achieve excellence throughout the delivery of evidence-based nursing practice. The Inpatient Nurse Educator is responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising staff education. Delivers a fundamental understanding of adult learning principles and a lifelong learner that can practice with flexibility to adapt or change learning strategies based on the assessment of learning needs within the healthcare organization. Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates educational needs to facilitate learner development and skill training of clinical staff. Utilizes innovative teaching strategies, assessment skills, and evaluation of outcomes. Assumes responsibility for the coordination of education focused on staff education, self-management, and customer satisfaction throughout the healthcare continuum. Follows procedures per established policies and guidelines. Influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team. Core elements of performance include knowledge and active participation in the department level quality improvement process and initiatives as well as customer service programs. Executes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to management of complex situations. Duties may include but are not limited to; Adheres to established policies, standards of care, and standards of practice that demonstrate leadership within Nursing Service. Utilizes specialized/advanced clinical nursing skills and knowledge of direct patient care. Functions as a clinical expert, role model, consultant, teacher, and researcher. Focuses on general nursing orientation and continuing education. Assists the nurse managers and other nurse educators in establishing and maintaining competencies of the direct care nursing staff. Possesses responsibility for the coordination of all academic levels of nursing students and faculty that train at Truman VA. Assesses, plans, and implements educational programs that support staff development and improve patient care outcomes. Possesses organizational skills that enable completion of work in a timely manner. Demonstrates the ability to assume leadership in a patient centered program. Establishes effective communication with patients, families, visitors, and members of the interdisciplinary team. Facilitates the growth of the Truman VA Academic Affiliation Program for the recruitment for future nurses. Qualifications Basic Requirements: English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U. S. C. 7403(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE); OR Individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program. Upon achievement of a State license, the individual may be appointed on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6); OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant an appointment
