Responsibilities 1 West is an acute voluntary inpatient psychiatric service that provides 24/7 highest quality care and stablishing environment for men and women veterans who are in crisis, experiencing an acute episode of mental illness and requiring an emergency admission. The 1 west registered nurse provides care and counseling of persons or in the promotion and maintenance of health and prevention of illness and injury based upon the nursing process which includes systematic data gathering, assessment, appropriate nursing judgment, therapeutic relationship and evaluation of human responses to actual or potential health problems through such services as case finding, health teaching, health counseling; provision of care supportive to or restorative of life and well-being; and executing medical regimens including administering medications and treatments prescribed by a licensed or otherwise legally authorized provide. Duties: Establishes patient care priorities that ensure safe and effective patient care. Possess through knowledge of psychiatric patients, suicidal patients, restraints patients, patients with substance use disorder/withdrawal and patients with PTSD. Safely and effectively uses equipment required for patient care and reports equipment need of repair. Effectively directs the flow of patient care and nursing resources. Uses the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) and the Bar Coded Medication Administration (BCMA) software per policy. Demonstrates grade-appropriate and consistent critical thinking skills; recognize the patient has a problem. The nurse can manage the problem safely and effectively, recognizing his/her scope of practice. The nurse has a relative sense of urgency and takes the right action for the right reason. Encourages and supports patients and families to participate in care and decision-making at the level they choose. Demonstrate sound clinical judgment in assessing, planning, documenting, and evaluating patients. Demonstrates positive effective communication skills and professional behaviors that promote cooperation and teamwork with internal and external customers. Demonstrate consistent critical skills to ensure positive outcomes in the care of psychiatric patients, suicidal patients, retrained patients, patients with substance use disorder/withdrawal and patients with PTSD. Collaborates with patients, families, health care practitioners, and health care leaders in policy and program development, implementation, and evaluation, as well as in the delivery of care (Patient and Family Centered Care). Practices and fosters in staff the belief that care giving is best achieved through kindness and compassion, and families, friends and loved ones are vital to the healing process (Patient and Family Centered Care; Planetree). Acts as Charge RN as assigned. Precepts and mentors new staff and students. Maintains current BLS certifications Maintains current PMDB training. Qualifications Basic Requirements: English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U. S. C. 7403(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE); OR Individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program. Upon achievement of a State license, the individual may be appointed on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6); OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant an appointment as a Nurse who has completed an associated degree/entry level Nursing education program. Credit for foreign nursing education higher that associate degree/entry level requires a formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation accepted by VA such as International Consultants of Delaware (ICD).
