DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Office of Chronic Disease seeks a high functioning candidate that will function as the Public Health Educator for an obesity prevention initiative aimed at providing education and active living options. The Public Health Educator will provide nutrition and exercise classes to eligible cancer survivors enrolled in the Active Living After Cancer (ALAC) program. The candidate will also liaise with local community organizations and residents to enroll participants and develop partnerships. The selected candidate will perform the following duties along with other duties as assigned:

1. Plan, organize, and implement evidence based chronic disease programming with an emphasis on exercise and nutrition education that align with community needs and wellness goals

2. Collect and analyze data to assist in the development, pretesting, and evaluation of exercise-related education techniques and materials.

3. Collaborate with partner organizations to schedule and deliver multi-session education with adequate retention rate

4. Create and present engaging content that addresses various chronic disease topics (diabetes, hypertension, obesity, cardiovascular health)

5. Establish and maintain strong working relationships with community organizations, businesses, and other private sector groups through active participation in advisory committees, outreach events, and collaborations.

6. Prepare or assist in the creation of health education materials, including pamphlets, visual aids, and other resources, to support exercise and wellness initiatives.

7. Ensure materials are accessible, informative, and tailored to the target audience.

8. Advocate for the importance of physical activity and healthy lifestyles through various communication channels.

9. Assist with the development and training of Public Health Educator staff to enhance their skills in delivering effective exercise and education programs.

10. Support staff in implementing program strategies and staying updated with best practices in health education.

11. Oversee the scheduling and logistics of health education activities and ensure they are executed efficiently.

12. Manage program resources and coordinate with relevant stakeholders to ensure successful delivery.

13. Reporting and Documentation:

14. Maintain accurate records of program activities, participant engagement, and outcomes.

15. Assist with preparation of detailed reports and presentations for stakeholders to highlight program successes and areas for improvement.

16. Performs other duties and special projects as requested.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The position occasionally requires stooping or bending. Occasional very light lifting, such as three or four reams of papers or books (up to 20 pounds or an equivalent weight) may be required. There are no major sources of discomfort, i. e., essentially normal office environment with acceptable lighting, temperature and air conditions.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Requires a Bachelor's degree in Education, Behavioral Science, or a closely related field such as Public Health.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

No experience is required.

Directly related professional experience in Public Health, Education or a closely related field may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

None.

**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**

Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Education or related disciplines

Knowledgeable of fitness strategies and techniques; CPT certification

Bilingual - Spanish, Vietnamese, etc.

Ability to work weekends

Pay Grade 14

SALARY INFORMATION GRANT FUNDED

Grant and Special funded positions are dependent upon continued available funds. If funding is no longer available, employee may be laid off or transferred.

Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
