What you'll do Under the direction of the medical and nursing personnel, the Perinatal LPN assists in basic care of the antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum and neonatal patient. The Perinatal LPN also maintains unit equipment and supplies, performs basic screening tests, collects specimens and assists physicians, midwives and nurses with procedures and peri-operative cases. Serves as a member of the OB-OR team as a scrub technologist working with OB/GYN surgeons, registered nurse, anesthesiologists, certified nurse anesthetists, and ancillary support personnel whose primary function is scrubbing for surgical cases such as scheduled and/ or emergency C-sections, hysterectomies, and PPTL. These functions include handling instruments, supplies, medication, media, specimens and instrument cases. When required, will function as a second assistant. Surveys the environment of care and maintains the environment in a state of safety and readiness. a. Stocks all areas with appropriate supplies and equipment. b. Monitors supply levels and requests restocking/reordering as indicated. c. Ensures that supplies and equipment are kept in proper location. d. Manages hallway clutter. e. Reports defective equipment and environmental hazards appropriately. f. Demonstrates understanding of and adherence to proper procedures for handling and cleaning equipment. g. Maintains patient rooms in state of cleanliness and organization. h. Restocks labor rooms following delivery i. Disposes of potentially infectious or hazardous materials according to defined procedures. j. Monitors and records temperatures for specimen and breast milk refrigerators daily. k. Responds appropriately to out of range refrigerator temperatures. l. Cleans scrub room refrigerator monthly. m. Checks for outdated pharmaceuticals monthly. Employee may engage in departmental medication management not related to administration. Activities may include placing pharmacy stock orders, stocking rooms/procedure areas, stock rotation and verification of end of use dates. Communicates effectively with nursing, professional, allied health and support staff. a. Reports patient needs and relevant care data to appropriate RN accurately and promptly b. Uses Vocera consistently according to policy c. Participates in face to face change of shift handoff with oncoming Perinatal Tech using SBAR format d. Demonstrates respectful assertiveness in team communication Performs testing and screening on adult and neonatal patients as ordered. a. Uses 2 approved identifiers to identify each patient. b. Performs and documents routine hearing screening on all newborns and completes charge document. c. Signs out and delivers blood products according to policy. Performs basic patient care. a. Conducts and records hourly rounds on assigned schedule. b. Answers call lights promptly. c. Fulfills patient requests promptly or relay to appropriate RN d. Obtains vital signs, weights, I&O and other clinical measurements on adults and newborns. e. Assists patients with ADLs such as bathing (adult and newborn), toileting, diaper changing, bottle-feeding, serving and picking up trays. f. Ambulates post-op patients safely on assigned schedule. g. Transports adult and newborn patients safely according to policy. h. Documents all patient care activities per unit standards. i. Assists nurses and providers with procedures as needed. j. Shows Shaken Baby video to parents and completes accompanying paperwork. Mandatory Requirements. a. Adheres to Bassett's confidentiality policy b. Reviews e-mail weekly c. Adheres to isolation procedures Education and training a. Checks HealthStream monthly for assigned learning and completes assigned learning on schedule. b. Completes annual competencies. c. Attends education sessions as requested by supervisor d. Orients new Perinatal Techs e. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary for the primary populations of patients served on the Birthing Center: Neonate (birth - 28 days), Adolescent (12 - 18 years), and Adult (18 - 65 years). Demonstrates the assimilation of the principles of asepsis, patients, and staff safety in performance of duties a. Responsible for managing the surgical field effectively to assure minimal waste of supplies and equipment. b. Maintain supplies and equipment in OB/GYN specialty. c. Demonstrates skills in scrubbing as measured by direct supervisory observation or if in training, satisfactory progress. d. Uses experience and knowledge to assist in solving immediate patient care problem within the scope of scrub tech practice as measured by direct supervisory observation and co- worker feedback e. Is capable of selecting the equipment and supplies required for the given case including the MD's special needs - gloves, retractors, forceps etc. f. Performs a daily check of the OB operating suite to ensure readiness for any emergent cases. g. Performs a daily check of all labor suites to ensure readiness. h. Is skilled to handle the instrumentation safely with special attention to counts and personal safety as measured by direct supervisory observation and co-worker feedback i. Adheres to standards of practice as set forth in policy and guidelines to assure patient safety. j. Assists with the maintenance of inventory for assigned specialties k. Uses supplies and institutional resources in a financially responsible manner l. Maintains an orderly, clean, and safe work environment and personal appearance. m. Recommends instrumentation to be sharpened or replaced as needed. n. Demonstrates knowledge through use of equipment and supplies used for the surgical procedure o. Assists in the training process of students or orientation of new personnel p. Will participate in staffing patterns to stay late or come in early for emergent C-sections. Behavior exhibits knowledge of skills, importance of teamwork and consideration of others. a. Demonstrate a positive attitude, uses flexibility and innovation while problem solving b.
