On our Ninth Floor Surgical Unit, you will be caring for patients with a wide variety of concerns, such as knee and hip replacements, digestive procedures, and even plastic surgery. With such variety no two days are the same, but you will be surrounded every day by a team of long-standing nurses and world-renowned surgeons who welcome you with open arms. This position harnesses the skills of an experienced RN who recently retired but wants to transfer their knowledge to newer nurses within the organization. Your primary duties will include, but are not limited to:

Providing coaching, teaching and educational materials.

Providing assessments and audits of daily practice.

Assessing educational needs of patients and families.

Has a current state licensure as an RN and at least three years of experience in an RN Hospital position at Cleveland Clinic immediately prior to retirement.

**Responsibilities:**

Assess health status by completing a nursing assessment.

May perform telephone triage.

Notifies physician/LIP of abnormal findings.

Establishes a care plan in collaboration with the patient, family, and health care team.

May assist with specialized diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Prioritizes and performs direct care to patients according to policy.

Administers medications and treatments as ordered by physician/LIP and monitors patients for response.

Documents medications on medication administration record (MAR).

Monitors patient's response to medications; documents and reports appropriately.

Reports medication errors and adverse reactions per policy.

Demonstrates knowledge concerning medications, including side effects; educates patients on their medications and their side effects.

Verifies patient ID per policy.

Provides health education to patients and families. Develops, evaluates, adapts, and documents education to learning needs.

May participate in quality initiatives and process improvements activities to improve patient outcomes, patient experience, and patient safety.

Initiates CPR and other emergency measures. Covers other nursing roles within the department.

Complies with safety standards and reports safety issues as appropriate.

Completes Annual Specific Competencies.

Adheres to all Customer Service Standards of Excellence as identified in the statement.

Facilitates smooth operation of the ambulatory areas.

Utilizes the nursing process: patient advocacy, maintenance of aseptic technique, medication administration, documentation of treatments and care, management of equipment, patient safety, and monitoring vital signs.

**Education:**

Graduate from an accredited school of professional nursing.

**Certifications:**

Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).

Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) required upon rehire.

In areas performing moderate sedation procedures and/or cardiac stress testing, must have current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) Certification upon rehire.

(ONS) Chemo/Bio course complete within 3 months of employment if employed on units inpatient and/or outpatient where chemo is administered.

**Complexity of Work:**

Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

Performs work that is accurate, neat and consistent.

Safety: Keeps work area neat and maintains equipment in accordance with health and safety codes.

Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Professional behavior/appearance required, ability to focus on patient safety, teamwork, patient outcomes, patient experience and quality improvement.

**Work Experience:**

Minimum of 3 years' experience in a RN Hospital position at the Cleveland Clinic immediately prior to retirement.

Current demonstrated clinical competence.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

**Physical Requirements:**

Requires full range of motion, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.

Requires corrected hearing and vision to normal range.

Requires frequent walking from department to department; requires sitting at a workstation or desk; requires standing; work may include occasional pushing and/or pulling, lifting, and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs., such as files, documents and computer printouts.

Work requires finger dexterity and eye/hand coordination to operate a computer keyboard at a moderate skill level.

Mental Demands: Ability to work at a fast pace and prioritize multiple assignments/projects and respond to numerous requests; ability to resolve conflicts among staff and to work collaboratively with department directors, physicians and other members of the healthcare team; ability to ensure operational efficiency; ability to problem-solve and make decisions; ability to exercise self-control and tolerate stress when dealing with multiple requests and/or conflicting demands from multiple customers.
