Position Title: LPN FLSA Status: Exempt Reports to: Building Nurse/Principal Days: 176 =======================================================================
QUALIFICATIONSRequires the following
Qualified to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the State of Iowa and holds an unrestricted license
Certified in CPR, First aid training and Bloodborne pathogen training.
POSITION PURPOSETo work under the school nurse to perform duties of the health paraprofessional to achieve optimal care for students in a compassionate and supportive manner. To provide 1:1 nursing care to students as needing under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. DEMONSTRATED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Excellent organizational and problem solving skills
Demonstrated ability to maintain a safe and healthy environment for students
Knowledge of county, state and federal laws and requirements
Ability to follow both oral and written directions
Must be able to work independently and cooperatively
Aptitude for high standards of workmanship, cleanliness, safety, and security
Ability to relate positively with students, staff, parents, and public
Excellent communication, human relations, and public relations
Ability to handle stressful situations, reacting calmly in emergency situations, cope with change, and work under
pressure while using good judgment in making decisions
Excellent telephone skills, keyboarding skills, and attention to detail
Ability to use a personal computer, word processing software, database, and spreadsheet software applications,
including the student information system database
Ability to operate a variety of office and school machines
Ability to multi-task various responsibilities in a pressure related environment with frequent interruptions
Ability to apply common sense in situations and deal with or solve problems
PERFORMANCE ACCOUNTABILITIES
Works under direct supervision of the Registered Nurse.
Assists with vital signs of students and staff when necessary
Assists with screenings as necessary
Maintain strict confidentiality and protect the confidential nature of information concerning staff, students, and related information; relating professionally to sensitive matters.
Act as a liaison/resource for the school community serving students, staff, parents, and the community.
Demonstrate the ability to get along with others and foster a positive team relationship with administrators, students, parents, staff, and community.
Provide prompt, thoroughly completed assignments in a correct manner paying attention to detail. Maintain work area in a clean and orderly condition
Comply with district policies, as well as state and federal laws or regulations. Use correct grammar, speech, and speech tone at all times.
Assist in making and receiving phone calls from parents regarding attendance, medication, or health concerns.
Administer medications to students and record appropriate data under supervision of an RN. Ensure that medications are issued to the appropriate student in a timely manner. Accurately maintain individual student records of clinic visits.
Perform the usual clinic clerk practices relating to students using generally acceptable safety procedures. File and
maintain doctor excuses for absences and other reasons (P. E., etc.). Assist the nurse in maintaining health and immunization records.
Maintain student health records in the student information system as required by policy or as directed.
Direct student workers in the clinic to deliver passes/messages to students and disperse homework requests to
teachers as directed by the nurse or principal. Supervise and work with students as required.
Alert the RN of any reports from parents or students who have sustained injuries or have provided personally
identified health information that the nurse may not be aware of in a timely manner.
Ensures compliance with all state laws and procedures
Uses community resources for referral of students with unmet health needs in school.
Collaborates with agencies within and outside of the community to insure continuity of services and
care.
Provides direct health services/emergency care to individual students and staff under supervision of the RN.
Identifies students and staff members with communicable diseases. Reports those to the RN
Orders and maintains adequate supplies to carry out the health program.
Maintains health records for all students.
Implements school medication policy as supervised by the RN
Performs other duties as assigned by the RN
PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND VISUAL EFFORTContinuous sitting, speaking, hearing, and visual effort. Frequent standing, reaching, stooping, kneeling, and repetitive hand motions. Occasional climbing, lifting and carrying up to 35 lbs. Close mental and visual attention. Fine motor skills and fine manipulation abilities necessary. Work involves numerous irregularities including complicated, complex, repetitive, and varied tasks. Continuous general concentration necessary. WORKING CONDITIONS?Work is primarily performed in a clinic setting. Occasionally exposed to dust, noise, odors, and other irritants. Stress associated with work pace and pressure. Work with frequent interruptions and distractions. May be exposed to germs and viruses as a part of working with children.
