Summary The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) of the Mental Health Rehabilitation Residential Treatment Program (MH RRTP) is responsible for providing a wide range of patient personal care, diagnostic services, treatment, and charting activities in a psychiatric substance abuse treatment unit under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN). Licensed Practical Nurse - The Mental Health Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (MH RRTP) Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), performs duties to encourage patient efforts toward goals of recovery and maintain a safe and therapeutic environment while promoting a sense of worth and dignity for the patient. Duties include but are not limited to: Reports and records current observations such as patient's physical condition, emotional response, and results of procedures; observes skin conditions, variations in vital signs, personal habits of patients, and listens for clues to patient's reaction to illness and treatment. Maintains precise adherence to basic principles of asepsis, safety, and universal precautions to provide a safe environment for patients, families, and employees. Observes and responds to changes in patient's behaviors by providing emotional support, intervening to correct the problem, or reporting the situation to the Registered Nurse. Provides patient and family education regarding the patient's condition, procedures, and preventive health care; reinforces health teaching initiated by the multidisciplinary treatment team. Utilizes knowledge of pharmacology to properly prepare and administer medications under direct and indirect supervision. Recognizes contradictions of medications and assesses the effectiveness of medications given. Obtains information about the patient and charts pertinent data regarding the patient's condition, procedures performed, and medications given. Work Schedule: Alternating Nights, 7:30 pm - 8:00 am, rotating holidays and weekends. Subject to change based on the needs of the facility. Qualifications Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language: Licensed practical or vocational nurses appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in [both] spoken and written English as required by 38 U. S. C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). Education: Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) at the time the program was completed by the applicant. Verification can be obtained from the State approving agency or the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, 61 Broadway, 33rd Floor, New York, NY 10006. Licensure: Full, active, current and unrestricted licensure as a licensed practical or vocational nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i. e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or District of Columbia. An LPN/LVN who has or has ever had, any license(s) revoked, suspended, denied, restricted, limited, or issued/placed in a probationary status may be appointed only in accordance with the provisions in chapter 3, section B, paragraph 16 of this part. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements stated, the following qualification criteria must be met for each grade. The candidate's qualifications must clearly demonstrate the level of competence required for the grade. GS-03: None beyond the basic requirements.
