Description

Roles vary depending on their specialty but includes optimizing patient care by working with nursing team members. This includes evaluating current practices, reviewing alternatives, consultations with patient care managers and providing team member education. The Orthopedic Clinical Nurse Specialist is responsible for the leadership and clinical expertise; providing expert comprehensive support that impacts nursing care directly to patients, supports and develops registered nurses at the point of care and serves as a leader in redesigning systems to improve access, quality, and safety in a cost-effective manner. The CNS improves care by putting the best evidence and innovations into practice while solving challenging patient care issues and monitoring patient outcomes for clinical effectiveness based on the three spheres of impact; Direct patient care, Nursing practice and Organizational/systems per the National Associations of Clinical Nurse Specialist ( ).

Principle Accountabilities:

Utilizes evidence-based practices to guide nursing practice and support patients and families. Assesses the needs, plans, and implements quality improvement programs.

Plans with team members to identify interventions within the plan of care that reflect current scientific knowledge; practice and promote continuity of care.

Evaluates effectiveness of interventions for resolution or preventing patient care problems.

Critically evaluates existing practice based on current research findings and integrates changes into practice.

Utilizes the research process to improve patient care outcomes and enhance the environment of care.

Serves as a mentor and role model by participating in the resolution of ethical and clinical dilemmas.

Promotes recruitment and retention by providing guidance, support and professional development to team members and students.

Collaborates with manager to identify clinical activities to facilitate professional growth of team members.

Leads discovery of innovations in patient care. Promotes a learning environment that enables nursing and other healthcare personnel to make optimal contributions.

Other organizational committee participation/duties as assigned; includes chair and co-chair as appropriate.

Role requires specialty knowledge, skills, and abilities in the fields of Orthopedics and Nursing Education

Uses advanced communication skills to address complex situations and conversations.

Intervenes to educate, guide and coach the patient, family and caregiver (s) to establish a patient centered plan of care and navigate complex healthcare systems.

Competencies:

Requires an in-depth understanding in the specialty area of critical care with demonstrated clinical competency.

Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of current trends, practices and research related to Orthopedic Nursing.

Able to work autonomously within a self-directed health-care team.

Computer skills are required for documentation and utilizing databases.

Required:

1. Master's degree in Nursing or related field.

2. Valid New Jersey Nursing License Required.

3. Obtains and maintains specialty certification (Orthopedic Certified Nurse required within 1 year) and membership in a professional organization related to clinical practice (NAON).

Preferred:

1. Doctorate degree in Nursing.
