Summary The Critical Care Unit Assistant Nurse Manager is a professional registered nurse (RN) who is responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care. H/She is accountable for adhering to established policies, standards of care and standards of practice. This RN demonstrates leadership when providing and improving patient care. The incumbent reports directly to the Critical Care Nurse Manager of respective area assigned. Responsibilities The Critical Care Unit Assistant Nurse Manager assumes the following roles and responsibilities: 1. Attends all mandatory trainings for My VA/Culture of Excellence/HRO training and ensuring staff are current in their mandatory trainings. 2. Functions in the role as a Charge Nurse, front line, resource staff when department needs require. 3. Represents the Critical Care Unit in meetings in the absence of Nurse Manager (NM). 4. Actively participates in and support Shared Governance and Relationship Based Care and related activities at the department level. 5. Assists the Unit Based Practice Council (UBPC) and the NM in the development, maintenance, and implementation of the five-star board, daily management system huddle, and addressing process related to the feedback from All Employee Survey. 6. Participates in and supports system redesign projects and lean thinking to positively impact the service and organization. 7. Proactively makes leadership choices to prioritize Veteran-Centered needs, operate within allocated resources and takes the initiative to find solutions to operational challenges. 8. Maintains knowledge and understanding of Joint Commission requirements and ensures compliance with VA, JC, and OSHA standards. 9. Maintain knowledge of specific performance results and metrics such as Strategic Analytics for Improvement Learning (SAIL), Nurse Sensitive Indicators (NDNQI), The Joint Commission Accountability Measures (ORYX). 10. Provide leadership, organization, and coordination of employees and resources to meet patient needs. 11. Supervises and coordinates patient care flow and efficiency and is accountable for all flow metrics. 12. Organize and lead staff meetings. 13. Provides input to the NM in the development and evaluating performance and competency of employees. 14. Collaborate with an inter professional team to improve unit efficiency and delivery of patient care. 15. Assist the NM and CNS in the development, organization, implementation, and/or maintenance of the orientation and competencies for new employees in the Critical Care Unit. 16. Assists NM and CNS in creating and revising unit policies and standard operating procedures as indicated. 17. Assists the NM with maintaining and signing timecards. 18. Assists the NM with completion of Patient Safety Event Reports (JPRS), Supervisor's Incident Outcome Report (SIOR), and Reasonable Accommodations. 19. Responsible for creating the staff schedule, on-going staffing request changes, and ongoing maintenance to ensure adequate staffing. 20. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Basic Requirements: English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U. S. C. 7403(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE); OR Individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program. Upon achievement of a State license, the individual may be appointed on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6); OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant an appointment as a Nurse who has completed an associated degree/entry level Nursing education program. Credit for foreign nursing education higher that associate degree/entry level requires a formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation accepted by VA such as International Consultants of Delaware (ICD).
