Description

Oversees the bed management process for all patients being scheduled, admitted, transferred or discharged in the hospital setting.

Schedule: 3x12 hour shifts/7AM-7PM

Days will vary

No nights, weekends or holidays

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

Provides patient care and education according to the patient population served.

Assesses the availability and accessibility of rooms to appropriately assign beds and facilitate patient flow.

Prepares daily schedules for the Surgery Center staff and delegates nursing assignments.

Collaborates with the environmental services team for prioritization of bed/room cleaning to facilitate patient flow.

Collaborates with the unit charge nurses in PICU, Inpatient Medical Unit, and Surgery Center and Preadmissions and Outpatient Diagnostic Services to address the needs of patients to support quality of care to assure patient care assignments are made according to established criteria, policy, and procedure.

Assures positive customer relations are maintained with patients, visitors, physicians, and hospital personnel across the organization.

Initiates action to prevent, minimize, and/or correct risk(s) to the patient, family, or hospital employee. Manages bed management situations to assure that involving risks are addressed appropriately.

Effectively utilizes the bed planner functionality in the electronic medical record to ensure the patient location is accurate and visible to the healthcare team.

Maintains "The Joint Commission" standards on an ongoing basis and assists in unit responsibilities for readiness for Joint Commission visits.

Serves as a resource for staff and physicians for bed management issues.

Provides patient care and education according to the patient population served.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Ability to perform a multi-tasked role as a leader, an educator and organizer.

Ability to apply knowledge of all ages and developmental levels to care given.

Ability to communicate concisely with patients, families and staff; collaborate with other members of the health care team to enhance care.

Ability to make assessments and problem solve.

Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.

Ability to respond quickly and calmly to emergencies and stressful situations.

Ability to independently manage multiple priorities.

Ability to utilize a variety of computer programs to manage work; familiarity with Windows and Office programs.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Registered nurse who is a graduate of an accredited school with a current state license required.

Bachelor's of Science degree in nursing required.

Minimum of 5 years of experience in a hospital setting required.

CPR, ACLS and PALS certified within 6 months of employment required.

Prior working knowledge of using a personal computer and electronic medical records required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum of 2 years of supervisory nursing experience preferred.

Pediatric experience preferred.
