The Surgery Department of James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital is seeking an Ophthalmologist to join our dynamic team.

Position Details: The VA Tampa Healthcare System is actively recruiting an Ophthalmologist specializing in Medical Retina and Uveitis. This role is critical in addressing the eye health needs of veterans, ensuring they receive the best possible care for retinal diseases while supporting their overall well-being.

Position Summary: The Ophthalmologist Medical Retina and Uveitis Specialist provides high-quality, patient-centered care to Veterans experiencing a range of retinal diseases, including diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal vascular occlusions, and other related disorders. The specialist works within a multidisciplinary team which includes 2 surgical retina specialist and 1 medical retina specialist to ensure comprehensive management of these conditions, emphasizing prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Clinical Evaluation and Diagnosis:
    • Perform comprehensive retinal examinations.
    • Utilize imaging techniques, such as optical coherence tomography (OCT), fundus photography, ultrasound, and fluorescein angiography, to assess retinal health.
    • Diagnose retinal diseases and formulate individualized treatment plans.
  2. Treatment and Management:
    • Administer intravitreal injections, laser treatments, and other therapeutic interventions.
    • Manage acute and chronic retinal conditions in outpatient and inpatient settings.
    • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to provide holistic care for patients with systemic conditions impacting eye health.
  3. Education and Prevention:
    • Educate patients on retinal diseases, treatment options, and preventative measures.
    • Promote awareness of eye health among veterans through community outreach and education programs.
  4. Research and Clinical Trials:
    • Participate in clinical research and trials to contribute to the advancement of retinal therapies.
    • Keep up with the latest developments in medical retina to integrate new knowledge into clinical practice.
  5. Documentation and Compliance:
    • Maintain accurate and thorough medical records in accordance with VA policies and procedures.
    • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and quality assurance protocols.
  6. Mentorship and Collaboration:
    • Mentor residents, fellows, and medical students in ophthalmology and retina.
    • Work collaboratively with optometrists, geriatricians, and other specialists to provide integrated care for veterans.

Qualifications:

  • United States Citizenship
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree.
  • Completion of an accredited residency in Ophthalmology.
  • Fellowship training in both Medical Retina and Uveitis.
  • Board certification/eligibility in Ophthalmology.
  • Licensure to practice medicine in the state of employment.
  • Experience working with veteran populations is preferred.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Compressed schedules (i.e. 4 10-hour days) are available (e.g., 7:00am- 5:30pm or 7:30am-6pm)

(Note: Work schedules are determined and approved by the supervisor. The incumbent may be required to work various shifts on a permanent or temporary basis based on facility/patient care needs. This also includes participation in On-Call coverage for evenings, weekends and holidays).

Salary Range: $305,000-$375,000

**No State or Local Income Tax**

Retention Bonus: Eligible

Education Debt Reduction Program (Student Loan Repayment): Position Eligible up to $200,000

Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases
Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME)
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA
Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)
Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory
CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full-time with board certification)
Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided
Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restrictions on moonlighting

Preferred Experience: Our service would prefer candidate has expertise in ocular oncology
