The Richmond VA Medical Center, located in Richmond, Virginia, is currently in need of a Physician — Critical Care- Intensivist. This position requires immediate filling and is open for your consideration. You will be responsible for providing coverage of the Surgical ICU, which consists of a 12-bed unit. This includes conducting assessments, consultations, rounding, and follow-up of patients. You will also be responsible for managing postoperative patients who require intensive care, particularly those undergoing cardiothoracic and neurosurgery procedures. Additionally, fostering teamwork and effective communication among all internal and external stakeholders is an essential aspect of this role. CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides in-house services as scheduled by the Medical Director or designee.
- Serves as the consulting physician for patients in the SICU – unit is open with no admitting privileges for the intensivist.
- Assists the attending surgeon in the management of patients at the SICU.
- In emergent situations at the SICU, evaluates and stabilizes patients until an attending or consultant physician can be contacted and/or arrives.
- Directs the management of such a patient until such time as the attending or consultant physician arrives to assume responsibility to direct care.
- Evaluates patients in the Medical Center for potential admission to SICU.
- Evaluates hospitalized patients who have become unstable and are considered for transfer to the SICU.
- Responds immediately to assist in the care of critically ill patients anywhere in the Medical Center as requested by an attending or consultant physician.
- Supervises and assists house staff in the evaluation and management of team-care patients.
- Research opportunities are available but not required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduate of an accredited School of Medicine or ECFMG certification.
- Current unrestricted license to practice medicine in the US.
- Board certified or board qualified in General Surgery, Anesthesia, or Critical care. If not, board certified at hire, must be board certified within two (2) years of entrance into the position.
- Surgical Critical Care Fellowship preferred.
- Have and maintain current BLS, ACLS, ATLS certification.
- During the period of employment, you shall be and remain a member of the QMC medical staff in good standing with appropriate privileges without restriction.
- Qualified for an appointment on the faculty of the Virginia Commonwealth University
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.

- Work Schedule: In-house coverage provided for one week at a time, separate day and night coverage.
- This is not a virtual/remote assignment.
- Salary: Commensurate with experience, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases
- Paid Time Off: 50–55 days of annual paid time offer per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME)
