A Day in the Life of a Polysomnographic Technologist

The Polysomnographic Technologist performs detailed assessments and polysomnograms to diagnose and treat sleep disorders under the guidance of a medical director. This role involves direct patient interaction, including preparation and education on sleep study procedures and the use of related equipment. Key responsibilities include calibrating and maintaining polysomnography equipment, administering tests such as MSLT (Multiple Sleep Latency Test) and MWT (Maintenance of Wakefulness Test), and ensuring accurate data recording and analysis following AASM guidelines. The technologist must adeptly adjust testing parameters in real-time based on patient responses and clinical observations. Collaboration with healthcare providers and continuous professional development through training and workshops are essential components of this position.

Qualifications

Education and Experience Required
  • American Heart Association BLS within 30 days of hire
  • If RT, licensed by the Board of Medical Practice (BMP) with the Sleep Disorders Specialist (SDS) credential -OR- if a Registered Sleep Technologist (RST) or Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT), licensed through Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (BRPT)
  • Successful completion of an accredited educational program leading to a certificate or associate degree with an emphasis in sleep technology or RT with Sleep Disorder Specialist certification
  • Successful completion of a sleep technology program associated with a state licensed and/or a nationally accredited educational facility or equivalent experience and documented proficiency for all competencies of a sleep technician

The pay range listed above is the estimated starting pay range for this role. Actual pay rate offered depends on many factors including each individual employee's experience level, preferred education/certifications, along with market conditions.
