Position: Primary Education Instructional Assistant

Shift hours: 8:45 AM-4:15 PM
Class Summary: Under the direction of a certificated teacher the Primary Education Instructional Assistant provides a variety of clerical and instructional supports to the classroom environment for Pre-K.
Distinguishing Characteristics: The Primary Education Instructional Assistant may be differentiated from other classifications as it provides classroom support exclusively to Pre-K.
Specific job responsibilities relevant for this position include:
- Assist classroom teacher in preparing classroom supplies and environment or preparing instructional materials to include making copies, organizing materials, bulletin boards, moving furniture, etc.
- Under the direction of the classroom teacher or other instructional staff performs student progress monitoring and assessments.
- Assists instructors in monitoring individual student and small group activities to ensure appropriate behavior and child safety.
- Under the direction of the classroom teacher leads age appropriate instructional activities for individual or small groups to support student learning.
- Monitors and assists students during school activities to include lunch, recess, restroom trips, specials, field trips, etc.
- May be required to provide additional support functions, including data entry, preparing communication notices, organizing school/classroom events.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Training and Experience (position requirements at entry): Previous education, training, work or life experience which provides reasonable evidence of the successful performance of the various tasks listed. Must be able to work independently and as a team member. Must be accepting of persons with differing lifestyles and varied economic backgrounds.
Licensing Requirements (position requirements at entry): A valid Alaska Driver's License.
Physical Requirements: Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
Job Summary: Applicants must be Highly Qualified. *Highly Qualified means you have met the paraprofessional requirements as defined by No Child Left Behind (NCLB).
The NCLB minimum requirements for paraprofessionals are defined in NCLB Sections 1119(f) and 1119(c)(1) as:
- High school diploma or GED, AND
- Two years of college (at least 48-semester hour credits); or
- Associate's (or higher) degree; or
- Pass the Para Pro Assessment and the Paraprofessional Standards Checklist.
