Medical Assistant duties:
1. Provides comprehensive, skilled, competent care specific to the age of the patients (neonate, infant, school age, adolescent, adult, and geriatric) based on knowledge, skills, scope of practice and the provider's care plan.
2. Participates in pre-visit planning for scheduled patients. Communicates the patient needs and recommended treatment to the patient's healthcare team.
3. Performs intake procedures by obtaining chief complaint/purpose of visit; vital signs – temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, height, weight, and pain assessment. Also performs hearing and vision screen when applicable.
4. Operates specialized equipment: EKG's; fetal monitors; pulse oximeters; respiratory equipment; digital and manual scales; thermometers; manual and electronic blood pressure cuffs, etc.
5. Incorporates and applies protocols in health promotion for well populations, as well as treatment interventions for chronic conditions.
6. Administers therapeutic measures in collaboration with the medical plan of care and within scope of practice; informs the patient of prescribed procedures; prepares the patient; and assists during procedures as needed.
7. Administers a pre-defined and pre-approved list of medications via intramuscular, intradermal, subcutaneous, and/or oral/nasal route as ordered by medical staff or according to standing orders.
8. Applies various orthopedic soft goods and splints necessary for the treatment of various orthopedic injuries.
9. Assists health providers in examination of patients by explaining procedures; positioning the patient; assembling, arranging, and draping instruments; and gathering supplies.
10. Assists provider by collecting needed specimens (uring, stool, wound, sputum, occult blood, nose, throat, etc.), accurately labeling specimens, preparing requisitions, enters lab into the Electronic Health Record (EHR), and explains the correct collections method for various specimens to the patient.
11. Recognize urgent, emergent patient and clinical situations; promptly reporting subtle changes in the patient's condition, including report critical lab values to Licensed Practical Nurse, Clinical Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Medical Officer and/or Physician Assistant. Responsible for providing communication (report) to the responsible accepting Licensed Practical Nurse/Clinical Nurse.
12. Initiates emergency measures/cardiopulmonary resuscitation appropriate to the skill level and assist with retrieving emergency medical equipment.
13. Reinforces patient teaching given by the professional nurse, licensed practical nurse, and medical staff in a collaborative effort to help patients achieve self-management health goals, negotiating a brief action plan regarding diet, exercise, taking medication, or other domains of the patient's life.
14. Participates and integrates standard regulatory requirements but not limited to quality infections control, laboratory standards, and safety in the clinical setting. Shares in the responsibility toward achievement of objectives.
15. Performs less complex dressing and treatments without assistance. Assist with cleaning, irrigating, and dressing complex wounds; documents and informs clinical nurse of non-healing wounds. Performs skin care measures.
16. Performs phlebotomy within the Health Technician scope of practice.
17. Performs blood glucose testing and records results using a glucometer. Performs other point of care tests as indicated by laboratory policy. Complies with laboratory requirement for glucometer accuracy and record keeping. Reports abnormal, out-of-range results to the Clinical Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Medical Officer, and/or Physician Assistant.
18. Participates in performance improvement activities.
19. Participates in meeting and all in-services.
20. Collaborates with other healthcare members.
21. Answers phone calls, including scheduling patient appointments, canceling and/or reminding patients of appointment time.
22. On occasion, check-in and check-out patients by asking for patient registration information and verifying 3rd party insurance.
