The Social Development Branch is committed to building relationships in the spirit of reconciliation and good relations, and convenes, supports, and builds the capacity of communities, neighbourhoods, social agencies and non-profit organizations, particularly those with a focus on equity-deserving communities, that are dedicated to making a more inclusive, safe and welcoming city.

Our work covers a broad spectrum including increasing the supply of affordable housing, community development, community safety and wellness, addressing homelessness, funding and coordination of preventative social services, Indigenous relations, social identity and inclusion and non-profit development and support.

Reporting to the Branch Manager, this role functions as a key implementer of strategic directives, transforming the vision, concepts, and initiatives of the Branch Leadership Team into tangible outcomes. The Strategic Coordinator plays a pivotal role in driving branch priorities through strategic planning, issues management, project implementation, and evaluation. This position offers a holistic perspective of branch operations, enabling effective coordination and collaboration with all levels of the Corporation and external partners.

What will you do?

  • Provide leadership, research, analysis, monitoring and recommendations on a wide variety of issues, primarily at the Branch level
  • Act as a key liaison, facilitating communication and collaboration between the Branch Manager, internal teams, and external partners to ensure alignment and effective execution of branch priorities
  • Build relationships and represent the Branch on a diverse variety of complex corporate initiatives, projects and working teams
  • Engage in varying, complex assignments and work independently on behalf of the Branch Manager and Branch Leadership Team on assignments that have varying degrees of political impact, confidentiality, and stakeholder and/or Council sensitivities
  • Lead projects in terms of identifying issues, planning, implementing and evaluating expected outcomes. This position interacts with all levels of the Corporation and/or external partners
  • Define overall strategic plans, measures and metrics to align with Branch goals
  • Develop, implement and manage strategic initiatives for the Branch
  • Build relationships and represent the Branch on a diverse variety of complex corporate initiatives, projects and working teams
  • Develop, analyze and prepare reports/briefing notes/memos for City Council, Committees and Corporate Leadership Team
  • Organize and coordinate Branch initiatives and participate in the development of Branch vision, mission, values strategies, long-term planning, goals and action plans
  • Respond to requests from other departments and the public for information and problem solving
  • Make recommendations to improve the efficiency, economy and effectiveness of Branch operations
  • Engages and supports staff in developing action plans to enhance communication, solve problems creatively, promote integration and support excellence
  • Monitor employee engagement and implement action plans with the branch engagement team as necessary
  • Provide administrative and logistical support to the Branch's Integration Coordinators and Administrative Assistant, facilitating efficient operations at the leadership level
