Description
The Open Space Design Unit within the Building Great Neighbourhoods Branch plans designs, and directs the construction of a variety of open space projects. The design team consists of landscape architects, landscape architectural technologists, and planning technicians who collaboratively develop the design and working drawings and oversee landscape construction to meet holistic project objectives that benefit the communities we work with.
The Landscape Architectural Technologist I position involves low to moderate technical design, drafting and fieldwork involving a variety of landscape architectural projects ranging in size from small to large. The primary function completed by this position is the independent design and drafting of landscape architectural drawings, contract specifications and construction oversight under the guidance of Landscape Architects and in collaboration with the Landscape Architectural Technologist II with support from the Senior Landscape Architectural Technologist.
What will you do?
- Prepare schematic, preliminary, and detailed designs for open space projects with a high degree of accuracy and efficiency with direction from the lead Landscape Architect and Landscape Architectural Technologist II
- Prepare bid and scope documentation to inform the development of cost estimates and budgets with guidance from the project team
- Ensure all construction work performed is in accordance with the Branch's Occupational Health and Safety Program and Enviso, including completing daily field-level hazard assessments and completing prime contractor safety orientation
- Attend site visits with the project team during construction to assist in quality assurance according to current construction processes and standards
- Support the Landscape Architect and Project Manager with the CCC and FAC process by conducting inspections and reviewing quality assurance documentation for CCC/ FAC approval
- Complete construction period audits, milestone inspections, and site visits
- Review all phases of construction to ensure that the work is carried out in accordance with design specifications, including noting deficiencies in horticulture, trees and shrubs, furnishings, surfaces, and overland drainage
- Complete observation reports with construction photos to capture construction progress, and provide updates to the landscape architect and the project manager
- Identify potential issues with design and/or construction; collaborate with the project team to develop solutions and recommendations
- Support the coordination of internal City services (such as Survey, Materials Testing, Traffic, ETS) and contracted services (such as Tree Pruning, Air Spaiding, Watering, Pruning, Courtesy Tow Coordination, etc.)
- Support general site safety and housekeeping, such as ensuring barricades, signage and survey stakes are in place
