Description

The mission of the Safety Codes, Permits and Inspections section of Development Services is to provide accountable customer service by empowering citizens through knowledge and ensuring the health and safety of the general public in the built environment. To support the public, review, inspect, and enforce minimum standards, safety codes, acts, bylaws and related regulations.

Reporting to the Director, Safety Codes, Permits and Inspections, the General Supervisor provides direction and leadership to specific teams responsible for building, HVAC, plumbing, gas, electrical, and other inspections in the City.

What will you do?

  • Lead employee development and coaching, performance evaluation and feedback, health and wellness, safety, conflict resolution, staff recruitment and succession planning for a staff of approximately 70 Safety Codes Officers and support staff
  • Oversee the work of contracted service providers including formal auditing of field inspections 
  • Identify continuous improvement opportunities and develop strategies to support team development
  • Support the Director, and General Supervisors of Permitting, and Compliance Learning and Innovation to successfully complete the most recent Safety Codes Audit and operationalize recommendations from the most recent City Audit
  • Establish the unit's work plan aligned with City Plan, strategic plans and policies
  • Ensure efficient and effective inspections that comply with the Alberta Safety Codes Act the City's approved Quality Management Plan, and that support Council and Corporate goals 
  • Ensure front line services and operations are delivered in a way that aligns with corporate strategy, Council direction and provincial accreditation
  • Establish and exemplify the desired culture throughout the Section that supports the branch and section vision as well as the Corporate Leadership Principles
  • Apply the GBA process to the development and review of policies, practices and frameworks
