As a State Superintendent, you will function as the senior executive leader for the state reporting to and supporting the Chief of Schools to drive the excellence of our K-12 network of schools' academic performance, operations, educational programs and CSUSA's core educational strategies. The State Superintendent is accountable for managing all operations personnel within their assigned state and is responsible for leading and creating the culture required to uphold CSUSA's mission, values, and promise. The State Superintendent will lead operations, strategic development and further support school improvement within their assigned state and work collaboratively with the State Director and/or Deputy State Directors (DSD), when applicable, in order to implement our premier educational model focused on data-driven instruction and student achievement. The State Superintendent will create a culture of constant improvement and is an inspirational leader, committed to operational excellence and attaining the highest student performance and growth outcomes. The State Director will provide guidance and support to the state staff and help them reach high levels of achievement. The State Superintendent will work with the state team and the Support Center to develop systems and processes that meet the needs of the state with oversight and accountability to the Chief of Schools. The State Superintendent will be knowledgeable of their state-specific education policies and procedures in all academic areas, school operations, mandated state reports, charter renewals, teacher and principal evaluations and accountability frameworks that determine school performance. The State Superintendent shall also be knowledgeable of federal statutes that impact academic programs and services within their assigned state.

Instruction/Education Responsibilities
Leadership & Development
- Build, develop and inspire high performing leadership teams (State Team, Deputy Directors, Principals) within the state.
- Develop succession plans and retention strategies to ensure business continuity.
- Facilitate career development and advancement opportunities.

Governance
- Build and maintain productive working relationships with authorizers and manage risk appropriately.
- Establish a high degree of credibility with each Board of Directors.
- Attend and support CSUSA board meetings.
- Work collaboratively with Board Governance Director to plan board meetings and build relationships with board members.
School Design and Business Development
- Support Business Development in opening schools that are fully enrolled, positioned to thrive academically, and have a strong financial trajectory.
- Continuously optimize performance of the schools in the portfolio -- prioritizing those that are below standard on enrollment, academics, and financials.
- Partner effectively with charter authorizers to maintain confidence in CSUSA, and garner continued support for school choice.
- Serve as the local "face of the organization" and maintain a positive image of CSUSA across the state.
School Support and Compliance
- Manage P&L for the state - accountable for state budget, financial management and long-range financial planning.
- Optimize operational performance and instill a culture of continuous improvement across the network.
- Ensure that each school meets enrollment targets and all necessary State reporting is completed.
- Collaborate with school leadership and relevant functions to ensure that all schools are fully supported.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations and policies.
Budget and Finance
- Accountable for state budget and financial management including responsibility for budget development and long-range financial planning.
- Coordinates the development and monitoring of the school budgets with Principals and State/Deputy State Directors.
- Works with governing boards to create budgets.
- Works with the Chief of Schools and State/Deputy State Directors to ensure budgets are aligned to overall national budget.

Job Requirements
- 15+ years of executive leadership in Business, Education Management, or other relevant experience. Combined public and private sector experience is preferred.
- Must have operational and management experience either with schools and school leaders or equivalent operations and employee management.
- Ability to lead and manage the turnaround of underperforming schools and achieve high standards on academic performance, enrollment and financial health.
- Strong business mentality and financial acumen required.
- Demonstrated track record of success managing complex external stakeholder relationships including Boards and government entities.
- Must have the gravitas and skill to establish credibility and influence outcomes.
- 5+ years' experience and proven success building high performing teams. Must have a management style that inspires confidence and collaboration internally and externally.
- Educational Leadership Certification(s) preferred.
- Strong executive presence and written and oral communication skills required.
- Ability to travel a minimum of 60% of time.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, and Student Information Systems.
