Position Summary  

Under the general supervision of the Food Service Manager, the Café Lead or Snack Bar Lead is responsible for the oversight the operation of the Bellevue College (BC) snack bar, fountain service or small dining area.

This role involves supervising the student employees and food service workers regarding the preparation and service of a variety of snacks, light lunches, and beverages. The Snack Bar Lead also takes charge of maintaining cleanliness, sanitation and safety while managing inventory and contributing to a positive customer service experiences for BC students, staff, faculty and visitors.

This is a 8-month cyclical position.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule  

Position Salary Range: $3,179/month - $4,199/month.

The salary information shown above is a general guideline only. The salary will be determined based on candidate's qualifications and related experience, as well as market and business considerations. Individuals newly hired to Classified position are placed in a salary range based on the WPEA Collective Bargaining Agreement. This is a 8-month cyclical position and actual annual wage will be prorated during cyclical periods.

The employee is scheduled to work 40 hours per workweek. This is a Classified, overtime eligible position and represented by the Washington Public Employee Association of Higher Education (WPEA-HE).

About the Department  

Bellevue College (BC) Food Services serves the college main campus by offering a full service cafeteria, three coffee shops and a Pizza Cafe (Housing) that serve hot food, light snacks, pastries, espresso, tea and beverages.

Essential Functions  

Leading Operations 

  • Train, lead and guide student employees and food service workers in operation of remote food service areas such as a snack bar counter, coffee stand, concessions. 
  • Direct and actively participate in the preparation of coffee, light lunches, sandwiches, soft drinks, ice cream dishes, and similar snack bar items.
  • Supervise and participate in large-scale preparation and service of food & beverage on assigned shift.
  • Oversee the storage and utilization of leftover ingredients and products, including rotating stock.
  • Prepare and serve coffee, light lunches, sandwiches, and fountain orders in retail store lunch counter, canteen, or coffee shop.
  • Maintain quality and portion control and ensure use of standardized recipes.
  • Communicate and work with food service supervisor to address operational challenges.
  • Inspect food service equipment for proper care, use, and operation; reporting malfunctions.
  • Maintain security and care of China, silverware, furniture, and related property.
  • Maintain proper storage for perishable and nonperishable items.
  • Handle cash transactions; accounting for receipts at the end of the work shift.
  • Prepare necessary reports to document operations including cash report and inventory report.

Sanitation and Safety

  • Ensure the cleanliness of the food service/ cafe area and equipment.
  • Comply with sanitation and safety standards and regulations.
  • Identify proper procedures for food handling, storing and disposing of food items to minimize contamination and waste.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications  
  • At least two (2) years of experience in food service work, including one year of lead experience, or equivalent education/experience
  • Must have King County food handler's permit within 14 days of hire. 
  • Knowledge of: 
  • Food & Beverage values and nutrition.
  • Personal hygiene, food handling, sanitation, and safety precautions.
  • Care and use of cafe utensils and equipment.
  • Record keeping (e.g., inventory).
  • Report preparation (e.g., supply levels and usage).
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills and ability to follow written and oral instruction. 
  • Demonstrated effective customer service skills with employees, students, and visitors.
  • Ability to work on several tasks simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Demonstrate experience with point of sale (POS) and cash handling system.
  • Demonstrate experience working with diverse colleagues and students in a collaborative and inclusive environment.
