Alcoa is seeking a dynamic and experienced General Manager to lead our Portland Aluminium Smelter. Nestled on the stunning coastline of Victoria, Portland offers the opportunity to make this most of your work-life balance by enjoying the many attractions of nature, history and sport that comes with this vibrant community. This is an opportunity to lead a 500+ strong team in a dynamic environment, driving innovation and excellence in aluminium production, while making a tangible impact on both our operations and the community.

Reporting to the Vice President of Operations Australia, this pivotal leadership position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the smelter's performance and leading the functional leadership team, including production, health & safety, environment, quality control, finance and human resources.

As the General Manager you will be part of the wider Australian Operations Lead Team and a key contributor to the global capability of Alcoa's smelting operations. You will foster and develop long-term relationships within the smelter and community and inspire your team to deliver exceptional results.

About the Role:

  • Ensure the effective operation of the smelter to maximize business returns, maintain continuous production of aluminium within socially and environmentally acceptable standards, and assure employee safety.
  • Establish challenging production objectives, operating and capital budgets, and resource allocations.
  • Lead and develop an effective management team to meet safety, cost, and efficiency targets.
  • Promote health, safety, and environmental objectives across the plant.
  • Ensure all personnel are committed to safety plans and enforce environmental standards to minimize impact on the plant and community.
  • Develop a consistent approach to employee relations, build a harmonious workforce, and ensure the right team is in place.
  • Coach and mentor high-potential individuals to create strong succession plans for critical roles.
  • Promote a diverse and inclusive culture within the smelter.
  • Ensure the latest developments in process and technologies are available to all areas of the plant.
  • Lead the deployment of Alcoa Systems, tools and initiatives.
  • Represent the location and company in government, community, and business relationships.
  • Partner with community leaders to develop solutions for issues of importance to Alcoa and the community.

What you can bring to the role:

  • Tertiary degree in process engineering, chemical engineering, metallurgy, or a related discipline is essential.
  • Post-graduate business or financial qualifications are highly desirable.
  • A track record in the leadership and management of large-scale manufacturing/production environments.
  • A collaborative leadership style where you have experience in building a high performance culture.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in delivering outstanding Environment, Health and Safety results.
  • Experience in management of financial P&L and key profitability drivers.

About the Location

Our Portland Smelter is a joint venture between Alcoa of Australia (55%), CITIC (22.5%) and Marubeni Aluminium Australia (22.5%).
