Overview

AdventHealth Orlando is looking for a dynamic and energetic physician with leadership experience to join and lead our Advanced Cardiac Surgical Critical Care (ACSU) Team for the AdventHealth System. This position would have dedicated administrative time and clinical involvement within our ASCU unit in Orlando managing ECMO, cardiothoracic, heart and lung transplant patients. The physician will work with our currently experienced and established intensivists, cardiology and pulmonology transplant medical/care team to help continue to grow and establish a high quality and highly sustainable Cardiovascular, Heart & Lung Transplant Critical Care program throughout the AdventHealth System in Central Florida. This is an opportunity to continue to build and cultivate one the busiest CVICU/Transplant programs in the Southeastern United States. In Orlando we have a full comprehensive Transplant Institute that includes both thoracic and abdominal transplant teams. Our team performs over 50 hearts, 20 lungs, and 30-50 VAD's per year with multi organ transplant capability. AdventHealth Celebration, AdventHealth Waterman and AdventHealth Daytona are campuses in our Central Florida Division with successful and busy open-heart programs and Cardiovascular Critical Care Units.

Responsibilities would include the following: leading the clinical quality for CVICU care including quality metrics and quality assurance teams; active participation in regional, national, and international meetings and conferences; education of fellows and staff; community outreach; and program development. The medical director would also be involved with building a core team of physicians working to improve the CVICU services within our system of nine Central Florida hospital locations and eventually within our statewide hospitals.

Additional responsibilities but not limited to:

  • Leading our employed ASCU/CVICU physicians and multidisciplinary team
  • Setting performance criteria for our entire system CVICU
  • Evaluating and maintaining an appropriate database of vital statistics
  • Formally reviewing M & M's occurring in the CVICU's
  • Hiring and retaining superior physicians & APP oversight
  • Developing subspecialty staffing models
  • Advising senior administration on system cardiovascular critical care strategy
  • Helping to advance AdventHealth into a world class critical care service

The Medical Director will also provide administrative liaison activity with key core members surrounding the CVICU structure in our system. These include physician members of the medical staff, Emergency Department, Department of Surgery and other critical care units, respiratory therapy, imaging, nursing services, pharmacy, clinical laboratories, and referring health care facilities and providers. The Medical Director's primary location will be at AdventHealth Orlando, Florida just outside downtown Orlando. AdventHealth Orlando just opened (September 2020) a state of the art 32 bed critical care unit dedicated to the cardio thoracic transplant service. AdventHealth has a hospital based organ procurement organization, Our Legacy, a top performing OPO in the USA.

System Medical Director Requirements:

  • Board Certification in Critical Care (ABIM) or Surgical Critical Care (ABS) required
  • Experience as a Cardiovascular/Thoracic Surgeon is preferred but not required
  • 3-5 years of experience as a CVICU physician leader that includes transplant, ECMO and VAD
  • Comprehensive clinical experience in large volume program with advanced cardiac surgery, heart and lung procurement, acute shock, heart failure and mechanical circulatory support
  • Communication skills/ability to build relationships with private and employed physicians

The AdventHealth CVI is centered in a tertiary facility known as AdventHealth Orlando with a beautiful Ginsburg Tower.
