SUMMARY:

This role translates factory automation concepts into complete mechanical designs, collaborating with sales engineers and clients to develop and present engineered solutions.  The Senior Mechanical Engineer will support the less experienced mechanical engineering team members. A key job function will be mentoring, providing technical guidance, explaining best practices, while still contributing to project design, costing, and final proposals as an individual contributor.  This position requires strong communication skills, technical expertise, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

All engineering team members may also be responsible for managing projects through the production process and taking necessary steps to maintain schedules. The project management tasks include regular updates to management or customers, daily guidance to assembly technicians, participation in the final inspection, and testing completed systems. 

All engineering positions at Gibson Engineering will include an aspect of technical support both for colleagues and customers. Providing education for our customers in a one-on-one, classroom, or presentation environment is often required.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Apply Gibson Engineering's automation products and technologies to solve client challenges.
  • Develop concepts and create proof-of-concept demonstrations.
  • Prepare proposals including 2D & 3D designs for machine frames, safety guarding, and complete automated solutions.
  • Develop, review, and maintain drawings, Bills of Materials (BOMs), project specifications, and engineering change documentation.
  • Participate in production floor activities, including prototype building, assembly technician instruction, and product testing and inspection.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement and documentation of internal engineering and production processes.
  • Communicate project status and expectations to management, sales, and clients.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to mechanical engineering team members, ensuring quality, efficiency, and best practice implementation. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering
  • 5+ years of experience in mechanical design or automation-related roles
  • 3+ years of SolidWorks or comparable 3D CAD experience
  • Strong computer skills (email, word processing, spreadsheets)
  • Understanding of traditional and flexible automation best practices
  • Working knowledge of fabrication processes and design for manufacturability
  • Comfort with public speaking and presentations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills
  • Ability to organize complex projects and prioritize tasks
  • Hands-on mechanical aptitude:

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Normal office environment with occasional hands-on work in a production setting, including operating automated and manual equipment or tools.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.
  • Regular regional travel expected, national travel infrequent.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods and use computer equipment.
