Description
This position supports the growth of the UT Dallas Freshman Mentor Program. The program specialist is responsible for all components of the Freshman Mentor Program related to providing participants with personalized support, facilitating small and large group meetings, organizing and implementing large events, strategic planning, program course component administration, and data collection and analysis. Additional duties include occasional support of the Transfer Mentor Program. Position reports to the Senior Director of Undergraduate Programs in the Office of Undergraduate Education.
About the Freshman Mentor Program
The mission of the Freshman Mentor Program, established in 2012) is to cultivate an environment of student leadership through mentoring that assists freshmen with the transition to college life and fosters a strong sense of belonging through academic engagement, social involvement, and community service.
College presents many challenges, both academically and socially. The Freshman Mentor Program was created to connect incoming students with current UT Dallas students. Mentees who choose to join the Freshman Mentor Program are paired with a student mentor to help ease the transition to UT Dallas, specifically during their first two semesters at the University. Peer mentors at UT Dallas work to support new students in the following three areas: leadership development, academic support, and social engagement. In addition to providing personalized support for each mentee, the Freshman Mentor Program hosts service, academic, and social events throughout the year for participants to engage on-campus and with the program more deeply.
Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in Business or a related field, with a minimum of four years of experience in program/project development or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Education and Experience
Preferred Education and Experience Master's degree in related area from an accredited university preferred, with five or more years of relevant experience working with student and programs in higher education, or related community programs, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience planning large- and small-group events involving internal and external constituents.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan and execute all training, programs, course requirements, and events about the Freshman Mentor Program.
- Demonstrate creativity in seeking and implementing new and effective methods for strengthening the impact of the Freshman Mentor Program.
- Provide day-to-day supervision of Freshman Mentor Program student worker.
- Facilitate and support the Freshman Mentor Program Student Leadership Team in the organization and execution of all social and academic events for Freshman Mentor Program freshman and continuing student participants.
- Function as primary email and in-person contact for addressing individual student needs regarding the Freshman Mentor Program. Determine solutions for addressing student needs and follow up with students promptly.
- Represent the Freshman and Transfer Mentor Programs in various university settings, either solely or alongside the Director and Assistant Director of Undergraduate Programs.
- Provide administrative support for Freshman Mentor Program participant requirements and course components, including monitoring participant task completion, attendance to required program events and training sessions, and submission of online assignments.
- Conduct weekly mentor group meetings. Document meeting outcomes in a manner that allows for both quantitative and qualitative analysis.
- Collaborate with the Mentor Programs Team in developing and delivering training, monthly meetings, and program event content for the Transfer Mentor Program.
- Collect, synthesize, and analyze mentor and mentee reports throughout the semester, as well as end of semester program survey data.
- Collect, synthesize, and assist with the dissemination of Freshman and Transfer Mentor program results and assessment data.
- Accompany student participants in the Freshman Mentor Program to conferences focused on student development.
- Regularly research mentor program best practices reported in academic literature.
- Be detail-oriented and have strong written and oral communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, a commitment to productive teamwork, and the ability to work with people of varied cultures and backgrounds.

Additional Information
Remote Notice: A hybrid remote work schedule (1-2 days remote weekly) may be available, and completion and approval of a UT Dallas Remote Work Agreement will be required upon employment. Use of personal computer, internet, and other standard equipment may be required. Employees must be located within the DFW area and have the ability to be on campus for work activities as scheduled and/or with 24-hour notice. Remote work arrangements are subject to regular review and re-approval and may be canceled at any time.
This position requires attendance to a monthly average of 3-4 after hours or weekend program events.
