Description

The head softball coaching position is responsible for all administrative aspects of the program, including scheduling, recruiting, team management, budgeting, and the direction of UTD-identified athletic/sport camps. In addition, should represent the department and university in a professional and ethical manner. Employee agrees to abide by the Code of Ethics as set forth by the University of Texas at Dallas and the University of Texas System. Knowledge of all Microsoft Office software and able to learn and use institutional software systems. Complies with all State and University policies. Must maintain a valid Texas driver's license and annually pass the NCAA Coach's Certification Exam.

Team Management/Student-Athlete Development

  • Actively guide and mentor student-athletes into successful life patterns and choices and actively support and monitor the academic progress of student-athletes, resulting in high GPAs, graduation rates and retention rates.
  • Oversee, organize and conduct effective practice sessions including sessions involving individual work.
  • Provide appropriate leadership, direction and supervision relevant to the academic progress and personal development of student-athletes within the softball program.
  • Create a positive and productive environment for the student-athletes.
  • Review NCAA and LSC rules with student-athletes when necessary and reinforce the importance of compliance.
  • Ensure the team's compliance with NCAA rules related to playing and practice seasons, including monthly athletically related activity logs.
  • Ensure compliance with NCAA Bylaws regarding uniforms, logos, complimentary tickets and summer camps.
  • Ensure that student-athletes and assistants abide by the university's ethical conduct and sportsmanship requirements.
  • Ensures compliance for student-athlete participation in exit interviews as needed and requested.

Recruiting
  • Oversee, organize and conduct an effective recruitment strategy that focuses on student-athletes who are eligible under the NCAA Division II and the LSC.
  • Monitor the permissible number of contacts and evaluations per NCAA bylaws.
  • Facilitate the provision of all information necessary to determine prospective student-athlete eligibility.
  • Provides complete off-campus contact and evaluation request logs and forms.
  • Responsible for ensuring prospective student-athletes are listed on the Institutional Request List and active in the NCAA Eligibility Center.
  • Follow the established process for granting initial, as well as the renewal and non-renewal of, athletic-related financial aid.
  • Work closely with the Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance in matters related to National Letters of Intent.

Budgeting
  • Provide complete and accurate expense reports and follow all university and departmental financial procedures while maintaining sport budget.

Scheduling
  • Declare playing and practice seasons and submit to the Associate Athletic Director for Compliance for review and approval.
  • Monitor the scheduling process, verifying that the schedule meets NCAA and LSC requirements, while developing a competitive regionalized schedule, focused on the strength of the schedule that will provide an increased opportunity for selection into postseason play.

Departmental Involvement
  • Work in support of UTD staff, faculty and administration in all areas including facilities, athletics administration, communications, sports medicine, student life and academic efforts.
  • Attend departmental meetings and major events, including professional development sessions, the Athletic Hall of Honors Banquet and end-of-year Athletic Awards Banquet.
  • Actively support and engage in UTD fundraising efforts for the program, the Comet Club, plus other UTD fundraising efforts as appropriate, needed or required.
  • Engage in the promotion of the University, Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and the program as requested by the Director of Athletics or the University President.
  • Respond to requests for information from the Athletic Administration in a timely manner, especially when deadlines are indicated.
  • Collaborate productively with colleagues of varying skill sets.
  • Communicate clearly, listen attentively and seek to understand others.
  • Complete tasks timely with work that is comprehensive, complete and accurate.
  • Other job duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.

Professional Development
  • Expected to be an active member of sport organization, demonstrating a professional commitment to involvement in local, regional and national program-related organizations as needed.


Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree; previous coaching experience, preferably at a college level; knowledge and commitment to NCAA Division II rules. Two years coaching experience.

Preferred Education and Experience

Master's degree and 5-plus years head coaching experience, preferably at the NCAA Division I or II level.

  • Recruitment of quality student-athletes; assist in the monitoring of academic progress, eligibility & graduation of student-athletes; exhibit impeccable ethical & moral character
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.


Additional Information

Must possess and maintain a valid Texas driver license with an acceptable driving record at the time of hire.
